Asparagus (planting)
« on: February 12, 2011, 09:34:49 am »
Have decided to plant some asparagus crowns this year but am coming across conflicting advise re:trench.
One website (which looks really good) has some detailed diagrams and explanations saying to dig a 10 inch trench and lay 3 inches of well rotted compost at the bottom before filling back in and planting the crowns.
however the packet says do not add compost until the crowns start to appear through the soil  ???

anyone any tips? thank you in advance  :)

Asparagus are heavy feeders and it takes an enormous amount of food to get each spike out of the ground.   I would aly compost in the bottom of the trench and then put a layer of garden soil over the top and then plant the ..... Asparagus on top of that the roots will find their way down to the compost as time goes by.  Keep the water up to them as well other wise they will be stringy
