My little 18 month old boer had a tiny swelling under her chin this morning, throughout the day it’s got worse, her sister has also started to get the swelling. It’s completely soft feels like fluid on both of them. Their up to date on worming, I’ve phoned my vet whose coming in the morning and asked about barber pole worms apparently we don’t get them in the uk?

Any advice I’m quite worried would be much appreciated

I am surprised how quickly the swelling appeared? Check their membranes - if pale the you have either Haemonchus (which is barber pole worm, and VERY common in the UK) or fluke (also very common, esp if the grazing is wet and goats are out all year).


Both require urgent action - and remember that wormer doses for goats are different from sheep - depending on the wormer it is either double or 1.5 times the sheep dose.

And not all wormers work on these parasites.
Just been looking up Haemonchus,  an infestation can take 250ml of blood a day!
