Hi, looking for some help. We have two female pygmy goats, aged just over 8 years. They are really our pets. They are not bred from or milked. One has developed a swollen udder which appears to give her no distress whatsoever, but I am concerned that something may be wrong. She is behaving exactly as she normally would and has no other symptoms. The udder is soft and warm, not hard or lumpy in any way. In case it was mastitis, my regular small animal vet has treated her with antibiotics, but they had no effect (guessing it isn't mastitis!). Any advice would be welcome. Thanking you in advance.

The weather has been doing strange things to the grass recently so there have been some "flushes" coming through.  Several of my girls have also suddenly sprung udders and I think would offer to milk if I were to persevere with trying.  If there's no hardness, tenderness or bruising it's unlikely to be an injury or mastitis, and if she's acting normally, I'd leave well alone and monitor the situation over the next few weeks.  If she shows other symptoms it's worth another call to the vet (or visit if you're worried) but I suspect it's just the weather and she's feeling good about life... you'll probably find if you don't milk her they'll shrink down again once the nights start drawing in and the goodness is gone from the browse!
Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical and expecting more than others think is possible.

Thank you, I'm certainly happy to try this and save spending £ on the vet unnecessarily!
