Week old lamb with swollen ear
« on: April 18, 2019, 10:20:11 pm »
Hi, I have a lamb that is a week old, one of his ears is very swollen and looks blue, like a bruise when you look at it underneath, it just feels like a big air bubble to be honest but it's not soft! Any idea what this could be? His ear has dropped right down and he's not fit to lift it up! Thanks

Sounds like a haematoma.  You haven’t ear tagged him, have you?  That’s the most usual cause.

Catch and take the lamb to your vet , needs AB'S  and maybe lancing ?    have had a lamb with a haematoma caused by being battered by its mother !

You should try and find out how the ear got damaged, it sounds like Heaemotoma which is caused by trauma. It could be an ear infection which has made the lamb rub excessively, or could be an injury caused by another sheep.

If its a haematoma which it dors sound like if left they do generally resolve but leave a cauliflowsr ear. Depending on how old it is it may be possible to reduce the swelling by removing some of the blood / serum and reducing the swelling if in doubt check with vet

Hi there, our rescue triplet lamb has a very swollen ear and in our case probably from birth trauma.  The first vet we saw said just leave it and it will sort itself out but be like a cauliflower ear.  The second vet visit, not about the ear, decided to put a needle in and drain her ear but within hours it had filled up again.  She’s also started to loose some fleece on her ear, possibly because the skin is quite stretched?  Basically vet wasn’t concerned!
