Title: Lightning strike
Post by: Rupert the bear on July 28, 2018, 11:19:21 am
The static caravan was struck this morning.
TV deceased, data link and cctv passed away, Mrs RTB frizzled.
the goat paddock electric fencer doa the chickens pen camera roasted.
A house hold surge protector doesnt work for lightning, a static caravan on blocks is not a faraday cage either.
for static dwellers please be sure to disconnect everything

everything in the old croft is ok
going to be a busy day sorting this mess out   :(

How much frizzling is frizzled?  I hope you and Mrs RTB are OK, and all your livestock.  I have heard of someone's entire sheep flock being blown to smithereens by a lightening strike - they were sheltering under a tree.  As long as it's only possessions, that's annoying but they can be replaced.  Stay safe.

Gosh that sounds scary, hope you manage to replace things quickly, and more importantly hope you are all OK.

Frizzled as in got repeated shocks a bit upset and shaken, she's now away to Argos for replacement stuff ,will wait until storms pass in the next day or so ,using 4g wi-fi . Insurance won't cover lightning.
I have to dig an earth pit and the static will be connected to an earth rod, have to get a proper
Sparky to check.
Later on I will bolt the stable door !!!
It's not the first time we've been struck either, that was the house 20 odd years ago.!
It's another challenge in life  :excited:
On the upside no telephone

Break a match-stick Rtb (where I come from, that's deemed to close out the 3 things)!  Really hope you get sorted soonest.

do the insurance industry still believe in gods throwing thunderbolts?! I guess it's an example of how language preserves dead ideas. But now we're alerted to it, I would have thought that this kind of bolt from the blue is precisely the sort of thing we wish to insure against, since it is patently not in our power to cause or avert.

Nope, just a good excuse for them not to pay out.

Surely lightening comes under storms and flood, explosions, riot and malicious damage?  These along with other things such as fire ect are all covered on my policy.

My Granny used to go and smash jam jars under a willow tree to prevent further bad luck.

Remember the definition of a banker (which presumably also applies to insurance underwriters): "Somebody who lends you their umbrella for a fee, but then demands it back when it starts raining"  :raining: .

It seems to me more and more that the moment there's a risk that you might actually need to claim on one day, they run a mile. Check out the attached screenshot from when I renewed my business insurance yesterday for proof of that. I'm sure they didn't ask that question last year  :innocent: !

Perversely the insurance for the static excludes lightning but the policy on old croft house includes it.
I looked under the static this morning to check it , the frame rests on concrete blocks an the tyres are just off the ground , there is a burn mark on one of the tyres !!! and a drain pipe is "withered" and needs to be replaced.
The electrician said had it been resting on both tyres the charge would have gone to ground better , hence the earth pit and rod .

A shockingly expensive weekend

But all your stuff was in the old croft house wasn't it?  And the  lighting travelled to it. :innocent:
