Just bought some saddleback weaners, they will need to be wormed soon, can any tell me what are the better wormers on the market.

We've never wormed our weaners but if I was, I would try Verm-X which is a herbal wormer. I'm going to use it for all our animals once the current stocks run out.

Why wouldn't you worm your weaners? I know they get some protection from the mother milk up to an age, but they will need worming after being weaned.

If you free range your pigs in an organic manner your pigs will not need wormed as the earth will naturally fail to support the woms that could infect pigs. Also, if you do keep them indoors, you merely need to 'rest' the barns between rotations and ensure they are cleaned really well when empty. If you are going to keep putting pigs on the same area without resting it, they will only need wormed if you are going to keep them for breeding.

You sound like a piggy man - what pigs do you have, or what experience have you had? I find it really interesting to read others peoples views and ideas since we are piggy mad ourselves!

We only keep two weaners once a year, so the pens are empty for six months between batches, which shoudl be long enough for any parasites to perish.

They should have come to you already wormed, when we sell weaners we always worm them before they go so they have as good a start as possible.

We always jab our weaners before they go with an anti parasite injection. It covers them for four months. I always feel happier to start them off when they are leaving me.
If we are keeping them for growing on, then we jab them at three to four months old. We jabs the mums three weeks before they are due to give birth, which offers protection to the piglets as well.
