Is it what we used to call 'cuckoo spit'?   If so, it's the nymph of the froghopper.

RHS has a page about it here (https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=490)

Not cuckoo spit, more solid than that, and wrong time of year.

I think it is a spider nest.

Google 'spiders cocoon images' and you'll see a couple like it - one is a cave spider which yours clearly isn't, another is hanging from a rush, but isn't exactly the same unless it's showing an already hatched sac.
I didn't put the links as they're several lines long.

If you are going to move the cocoon, then you need to take the whole rush stalk with you, and make sure the cocoon is still hanging, and is in the same sort of place.

I have googled and was met with a (word picture, thankfully) vision of a man getting a 4 hour erection after finding a spider cocoon on his bananas.   :unwell:

Woo, excellent, thank you [member=4333]Fleecewife[/member] .

I will do as you say and take the whole stalk - there is a log rack nearby I can stick them in where they should be safe.

I've no idea what Sally googled to get her results!!!!!

How come I miss out on all the interesting things ???   The closest I've got to anything raunchy was by searching black horned sheep.  That involved well endowed gentlemen although again no piccies.  And we all love piccies, don't we  :eyelashes:

Sally, you've lowered the tone  :tired:    But really, after seeing a spider cocoon? Or was it cos it was on his banana?    :coat:
