Title: Shearing Course - Scotland
Post by: Isla on September 09, 2017, 10:05:04 pm
Collected three pet wether lambs today (Gotland Xs) and thinking ahead to shearing. Any recommendations for a shearing course? I'm in Aberdeenshire but willing to travel and make a little trip out of it.

The Wool Marketing Board runs courses all over the UK, but in the early summer and it teaches the techniques used by professional shearers... I did one a few years ago and decided at the end of it that I was too old for that kind of exercise.... also the testosterone in that shearing shed ... all the 18yo lads out-competing each other.

I would see if you can find someone locally who can teach you to hand clip, in the states a few people with small (and tame) flocks of Shetlands seem to be using a grooming stand and just clip the sheep standing up and tied at the head.
