OH is in the process of buying some more land and it comes with fishing rights over a stream. I understand that there are likely to be brown trout in the stream.
I have only fished as a teenager (many years ago) and that was with maggots. Can I still use maggots for trout or do I need to fly fish?

If it's your stream, you can use dynamite if you wish! ;D
Yes, you can absolutely use maggots or earthworms to catch trout. All the usual float fishing (e.g. long trotting) and ledgering techniques will work fine.
I would encourage you to learn to cast a fly eventually though (it's not that hard). It would give me immense pleasure to catch a trout in a stream I owned, and using a fly I had tied myself from feathers grown by my own chickens. I'm sure it would do for you too  .

Expanding then Sally!

Thanks Womble, thats the reply I was hoping for. It would seem a waste not to make use of the fishing on a nice day.
Linda, its Geoff's project so I am keeping well away, other than the fishing

All the info about rod licences and what you can do where is here https://www.gov.uk/freshwater-rod-fishing-rules. (https://www.gov.uk/freshwater-rod-fishing-rules.)

Thanks Harmony.
I've found out the season only goes to end of Sept and he probably won't have the land by then so I guess I have 6 months to sort myself out and get a licence. Hmmm, wonder if anyone on freecycle has an old rod I could have

I'm sure I can sort you out with something basic but functional if you'll pay the postage, Bionic?

I would definitely be willing to pay the postage Womble. Much appreciated. I will pm you my address.
No rush though as I won't be able to fish until the spring
