Title: HELP POISONOUS PLANTS! Goats sick!
Post by: Mrspie on August 13, 2017, 07:03:40 am
Last night whilst I was out for a couple hours my young Golden Guernseys escaped and got into the flower beds. They are the rose bushes, hydrangeas, bamboo, hebe and rhodendron. Middle of the night they woke me up making load crys and being sick everywhere. I had vet out and we gave charcoal, pain relief and antibiotics. This morning they are still being sick and looking very unwell. Has anyone got any tips with dealing with poisoned goats?

Try to get some fluids into them.
Warm sweet tea is supposed to help but anything to keep them hydrated.

I think it depends how much they've eaten in proportion to their weight and what else they'd had beforehand in their stomachs.

Other than that it's a waiting game.
Good luck.

We had same thing .... Charcoal every few hours is all you can do.  Ours survived much to vets surprise .  They will need a rumen starter after a day or so if they recover.  It is an experience I hope I never have again ...thinking of you.

Thank you both, all three babies have started to vomit again today. Been giving charcoal every hour or so. They seem like they pick back up and then then start to vomit again!

Tried to get fluid into them but they are not interested. Anyone have a clue how long it takes for them to get the poison out of their system?

Try and get fluid into them, have you any small pop bottles, try and 'drench' them, bottle in side of mouth and get them to swallow.
Good luck, hope their Ok
Rhododendron is the culprit.
