Title: First pigs off to slaughter....
Post by: danccooke on July 26, 2017, 11:20:58 am
Our first two pigs went to slaughter this morning.   Loaded well.  Slept in the trailer there.  Had to wake them up to get them into the abattoir.  The mooched into their pens and seemed very chilled.
They have been amazing pigs for our first ones.  Great temperament very chilled out lads.   The other three youngers ones are still good but no where near as chilled out as these two were.   Looking forward to what should be damn fine pork chops on friday.

Look like nice pigs . Our first ones were more like seals they carried that much fat but we have learnt a lot since them and not made that mistake again!
Enjoy the chops!!

seeing lots of other pigs on different forums/facebook we were worried they were a bit underweight but the Vet at the abattoir said they looked great.  Obviously we will know for sure in a few days :) Three more of them in the paddock so it will be nice to know if we need to up,down or maintain the food regimen they have been on.

I don't want heavy pigs for the sake of them being heavy and the end product being affected by it.

I felt terrible about taking my first pigs to slaughter 9yrs ago, we hardly spoke a word on the journey and on the way home I felt awful. I kept telling myself that they were 3 entire boars and they couldn't be kept as pets. 3 days later we collected the most amazing pork I've ever tasted. Since then its been an easier journey there and back :)
