Title: Breeding age for GG's
Post by: Gunestone on July 21, 2017, 07:49:23 pm
We are planning on getting 2 goats for milk this autumn and had settled on Golden Guernseys.
If we got two kids, what age could we breed them at? Some people say 8 months for the larger breeds, does this include GG's?
Thanks!

Almost all small-scale and pedigree breeders will take their goatlings to the billy aged around 18 months to kid aged 2 for the first time. Kidding kids is sometimes done in commercial herd where the lifetime output is more important. Most goats will also put in a lot of growing in their 1st winter and if pregnant will need really careful feeding to make sure that both the dam and her growing kid(s) receive enough nutrition. Unless you are quite experienced it is not recommended to kid kids.

Okay thank you for that Anke, I though it seemed very young to kid them, maybe we will try and get some older goats.
