I had to jump in (sorry George)and show you all, this was my very first car - my pride and joy  ;D
I bought it in 1992 for the princely sum of £200 when I was 15 and spent the next 2 years and about £2000 doing it up (it was a total wreck when I got it) - selling it broke my heart and I've always vowed to get another one as a project, just got to find the time  ::)
After that I had a string of bangers, a BMW 520 (which only cost £20 lol!) VW golfs, scirrocos, and trusty old suberu legacy estates (can't beat them ;)) since hubby wrote of my golf gti I'm on the lookout for something now - suppose I'd better be sensible and get something to hold us, four kids and the dog  :o

I started off with a 850 mini - £100, but swiftly moved onto a Datsun Cherry 100a - £150, which was a brilliant wee car.

From there, a Hillman Imp Sport - £100.... another great car, but you needed to be double jointed to get into the back seat   :-[

Mk1 Ford Escort 1.3 Sport - £30, bought for scrap, but 2 days later was back on the road with fresh MOT & tax.

Morris Marina 1.8tc - £200, lovely comfy car, but hated corners.

Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport - £1200, loved this car, but someone liked it better & relieved me of it.

Mk2 Escort Mexico - £1000, another good car until a taxi run up my arse & wrote it off   >:(

Lada Riva project - £50, rebuilt using Fiat 2.0 twin-cam engine, box & Escort rear end, Bilstein suspension etc. Flew like the wind & sold it on for a good profit.

S2a 88" Landrover - £500, just fancied something different, but remained single for the 9 months i had her, so sold it   :D

Renualt 11 Turbo - £1000, another flying machine, same as 5 turbo, but with cheaper insurance, wish i'd kept it.

Renualt 21 turbo - £1500, a fast luxury car.... needs towbar for hauling fuel bowser.

Mazda 323 turbo - £2000, like clutches & center diffs... sold on rapidly

GOT MARRIED

Nissan Sunny 1.5 - £500, great wee car that never failed to start.

Renualt 21 2.0 - £500, a lot better on fuel than it's turbocharged brother... 42 mpg on a run.

Ford Mondeo Ghia Diesel Estate - £4000, very underated workhorse, kept for 8 years.

GOT DIVORCED

New Toyota Avensis Tx4 D4D - £lots, As good as VW, fantastic diesel engine, sold to fund house move.

Landrover Discovery v8 LPG - £5000, what more can you say...  was offered crazy money to sell, so i did.

Another Mondeo diesel - £500, went great til the pump went & couldn't source a replacement cheaply.

Citroen Picasso 1.8 - £2000, wish i'd never bought it...can't get comfy, crap on fuel, anyone wanna buy it ?

That's about it...

Funny thing this topic George. We have just spent 2 days trawling the car dealerships at Grimsby as we want to change our car. Talk about Dick Turpin! He is alive and well and working in Grimsby!
We were offered £10,500 for our present car at one place and 14,000 at another.

Oh Sheila I know and it is a very violent place to Do you get the Telegraph down your end.I have always said The car shark fraternity is the modern day Gypo Horse Trader. You didn't say what you had but I bet it went something along these lines.Well I would offer you more Sheila but that model is the worst one they ever made I cannot shift them at all if I get it It will have to go to a trade auction. The one you are buying Say Chandlers in Horncastle for the want of a better place.Well Madam its certainly the best car Subaru has ever marketed it does fantastic returns on the fuel economy and its out of this world for comfort Yes they do a diesel Boxer 4 it starts at £27k as a ball park figure Now how you have it appointed will of course alter the price. We will need to inspect your car before we can make you an offer. The one thing Subaru is known for is fuel economy at around 23pence per mile to use on petrol. (Oh I forgot thats mine its a 2.5 ltr petrol non turbo )with a very carefully kept record of how much fuel she drinks and every thing else like, The road fund licence has gone up from £185 last June to 245 quid this June Licenced her last Wednesday morning ??? no happy wave on this post Sheila

OK back to the day job as Sir Terry used to say.Quite an interesting vehicle was a Bradford it did not have an ignition key for a start. But it was reasonably safe with out one knew how to drive it You couldn't get it to move Start it easy put it in first gear let the clutch up gently and she stopped. The secret being the gear shift was opposite to Austin or Morris You selected 3rd on an Austin box which was 1st gear change to top on the Morris which was 2nd on Bradford lift the shift into botton on the Morris and you are now in top gear on the Bradford.Reverse of course down in 2nd gear place on the Austin. It didn't have a fan to cool the radiator so it would boil like mad stood at the lights on Lindum Hill a quick get away into Monks Road and the air rushing through the radiator soon cooled her down.Another thing she was 6 volt and the starter turned backwards compared to Austin Morris or Ford I converted her to 12 volts for when you switched on the 6 volt head lamps one had to get out and strike a match to see if they were alight.35 miles an hour and you were really motoring I can tell you.

Moving on from the Bradford I had a Ford 100E with an 1172cc side valve engine This was a modern up to date vehicle in 1957 I was reasonable and fast it would go faster than 85 mph down the Ermine Street that was before the Ministry closed the road and put the bends in that allowed runway extensions to allow Vulcan Bombers to land there.I swopped it for an ex-demo Standard Atlas 1 ton van very useful thing was an Atlas. Then I got wed and motor cars were put on the back burner for a while. The next thing I had was a Series 1 Land Rover It was a crap thing as well none suspended pedals Awful thing to drive far One has to pick ones foot up and place it on the pedal and press it through the floor board not push it forward as into days vehicles I'll set off again with the next car Which was a Humber Hawk TTFN

For the past 5 years I have had the bestest car I've ever owned - a Vauxhall Zafira.  Zaffy is soooo versatile - a 7 seater with space at the back for a couple of suitcases; or a 5 seater with room for a double dog cage and a couple of folding seats down the side, and a show bag; or a 2 seater with room for three double cages and bags galore!  If I change my car I will buy another one just a wee bit newer.

I think I have driven more vans than I have cars...

We had a A Team van when I was child, the person who had it before us had done it up in the proper paint job, red bull catcher and everything. It was a great van.

My first car was a VW Polo, nice wee thing. Loved our Volvo 340 to bits, but it died in the middle of the A1, in fog, with a trailer with 5 goats in it, that was a fun day!

Currently have a Ford Transit, 55 plate, the first car we bought brand new. It is a great van too- I enjoy driving it more than my little Astra.

Most reliable- I had a Citroen C15 van (model before the Berlingo) which would start every time. We eventually scrapped it, after it had sat on our driveway for 9 months. The scrappie came to pick it up, and 2 tyres were flat, and the catch on the drivers door was broken, and he looked at it, and said, how am I to get that onto the lorry. I went and got in it, started it up first turn of the key, and drove it up onto his lorry!

HappyHippy, my sister is on her 2nd Ford Galaxy as she has 4 kids too. It is a good car, and seats can be taken out to make room to transport things in.

Hello Beth. My word I can imagine the fun with the goats, Oh dearie me. Plus the worry of What Manic Depressant that is coming to make an 11 O'clock appointment and its already quarter to twelve sort of thing.I have always had a silly theory "If I cannot see I know you cannot"but some folk seem to think they can and steer their car at even faster speeds,Note I didn't say drive!Yes I have driven a lot of vans as well in the past mainly work vehicles though.A thing I always wanted way back when was a Citroen 2 CV.A farm student came to Mr Lundy's had one it was nearly as good as a Land Rover it went across the ploughing up and down muddy tracks across steep hill sides a go any where motor.Fred the shepherd had a Ha flinger Pony it was a usefull work vehicle but no good as a family car.I borrowed it several times to go across the fields to a broken down machine while he used my Mini pick up He liked it said he could manage with one.Of course he didn't need to go in the cultivated field only in the grass so it didn't get stuck.
So this chap tried to move a sand lorry with a Humber Hawk and I swapped him I used the works van while I got it repaired. It was a nice car to ride in I swapped it for a Mk9 Jaguar This Squadron Leader Smith was coming home for the weekend from up north and the engine threw a leg out of bed.Leaving him stranded Jokingly I said I'll swap you my Hawk that is in good working order for your Jag that isn't and £100  He said he hadn't got a £100 but had £50 and would send me the rest in the post so I swapped him not expecting to see the money I Knew where there was a smashed up Mk 8 with a good engine in which I paid Dave Hammy £35 for and changed the unit over using all the Mk 9 bits I only used the Mk 8 head block and sump every thing else I swapped over.We kept it for a good long time right up until the insurers went bust it was about 1968 time as I recall and all the insurance company's charged a premium to insure the people that had been with them I was quoted £170 TPF&T so she had to go I got a Hillman Husky what a come down what a heap of junk on wheels. It drove us about though never let us down. The next car we had I think was the worst one we ever had it went under the name of B'stard it was an Austin 1100 F reg I am not going to tell you of the problems I had with it.I swapped it for a Morris Mini Countryman you know the one with the wood on the sides. It was OK as far as it goes but to small for us all to go out in I had a long wheel base Land Rover for work and I used them for pleasure as well for a number of years.I shall tell you more later TBC

It's always nice to have a new motor I think but some can prove most tiresome but not like in the 60's Can you remember that EVIL little swine called Hillman Imp and its variants .Wonderfull little car Every thing went wrong with it that didn't matter really the boot lid handles fell off so you couldn't get in to check the oil and water.Ive changed my mind anything that could come loose and fall off did. ;D :farmer:

I passed my test in an old grey Ford Escort 1300 Mark 4 Eclipse, then bought a 1600 Ford Escort Mexico. A racy little car it was too!! 0 to 60 in 8 seconds.  ;D ;D ;D

I then had a new Vauxhall Astra but hated it as it had no 'UMPH' so then bought a Jaguar x type 2 litre automatic. I later bought a Jaguar diesel estate (which I still have) and trusted Jeremy Clarkson when he said it was the best and fastest Estate he had ever driven. Its true, its fast, easy to handle and economical, however, Jags are awful in the snow they slide all over the place.

Im about ready to change my car but am not sure whether to get a 4x4???

When I first met my future ex husband ::) he used to borrow his dad Morris 1,000 traveller with wood and grass growing out of the sides, I loved that car. I had then a series of minis then sensible cars as our family grew, one car I hated was a Renult 5 3 door, the sets used to keep dropping down when you were trying to put the chldren in the back and the doors were so big you had to park a long way off other cars to get out!!!!!! I take very little notice of cars although I love the VW Campers we have owned over the past 13 years and I now would also love a Landrover Defender, not sure why but thats me!!!!

I used to have a VW Golf that was so bashed and rusty I was forbidden from parking it outside the office! People used to come up to me and tell me my ladders had fallen off. When I sold it, it had done 120 thousand miles and was still going strong. The next Golf after that did 115 thousand before I sold it on.
Had a Passat which was fab for boot space but started falling apart the minute I made the final payment, a BMW 320i which is totally crap in the snow i.e it cannot move at all even up a one inch incline, and a Honda CRV which is nice and roomy and reliable and is great on snow and rough roads.
I would LOVE a VW camper van like Sandy! I also loved the old Morris cars with the wooden panels.... real characters.
If I won the lottery I would buy a big comfy Lexus  - my AA man told me (when fixing the passat for the umpteenth time) they were the most reliable cars he had come across!
HH I am so impressed you know how to do up a car! It was a lovely looking car.

Hello vair Lots of followers VW have. The one in the tea chests was a Transporter Pick up truck. Merv had the van version he and his pal turned a van version into a camper like Sandy's with a scissors roof that they made them selves it was a work of art I can tell you. Then the whole thing was painted in a rich royal blue with a sky blue waist band.Beautiful it looked finished.Brian has a Octavia we cannot see any difference between the A4 his Octavia and a Passat but the badges are different. It seems the 2010 Way of doing things haven't heard from Miri lately so hopefully the Land Rover is going on and behaving its self. ;D :farmer:

HH I am so impressed you know how to do up a car! It was a lovely looking car.

Val, I'm a TOTAL petrol head (always have been, always will be) I have to admit that I didn't do it all myself  ;) But it was the easiest way for me to learn how to fix it when it broke down (well, that was my Dad's reasoning) luckily for me it didn't break down often but the engine's so simple all it needed was a squirt of WD40 and a smack with a spanner lol!

Golf's always seem to go on forever (well, to about 120,000 miles then it gets expensive  ;D) Can you tell I'm a VW fan lol !

Wizard, my Dad's had a few VW campers over the years - always great fun !  ;D ;D ;D
Especially the one he put an alfa romeo engine in, we managed to achieve top speeds of over 70mph......................until it blew up  :-[ ;) ;D

If I won I would do up my VW with a super cool interior and very fast engine then buy an old Landrover Defender, SWB with a most lux  interior, heater, well sprung and again a BIG engine and super sound system BUT the outside would look as rough as an old Farm worked one!!! WHy, then I could drive it without anyone knowing how good it was and any scratches would just add to the charactor!!

My word Sandy over the years there has been some different sorts. My pal from Church Farm bought a new one a couple of years back and it had this Fly by Wire throttle pedal.Bloody dangerous One comes up quite a steep hill and out on to a busy A road The thing takes time working out you have asked it to go and with that something else is coming round the blind corner. He had it in Duckworth's several times for adjustment but I dont think it was ever as good as a cable control ??? :farmer:.

I really wanted a sports car when we were buying a new car last week. When I saw how low down it was I wouldn't sit in it when the salesman told me to give it a try. I waited until he and my husband were off discussing another car and making sure there were no witnesses I gingerly lowered myself in. It seemed like a bottomless pit and a long way down!. I couldn't enjoy it because I was worrying about how I would get out! Anyway I did get out and nobody saw me thank god. Why is it that now I can finally afford a sports car I am too old (Fat) (creaky) etc

I learned to drive at about fourteen years old in an old Land-Rover. You had to double de-clutch to change gear(yes, it was that long ago!) I had a Ford Prefect as a girl and had to tie the driver's door closed with a bit of rope.
I progressed when my children were small to a Fiesta and had to have my eldest in the front passenger seat to hold it in gear while I drove. Happy days?
Who can remember the days before seat belts when you sat a row of children in the back seat and told them"Now, sit right back!" As if that would have saved them in a crash. It makes me shudder now to think of it!!
I now have a nice modern four-year-old Landie, but find that, except for the gear box, nothing much has changed with them.

Tell me about it Cobra You can visualise me can't you What did we have after the Escort Estate Kath I think it was the first Daf the 33 Now theres a very under rated small car The 66 car was bought up by Volvo and they rebadged it as a Volvo 66 heap of s**t on wheels and a rotbox to boot.Little story.George Gosling The Mechanical Engineer at Cherry Valley Duck Farms rang me and said meet me tomorrow at my Rocket Site Office 11.30am Will you Yes said I and did.I want to go down to the Pasfier Ditch.Get in then we will go down the rocket site in Daffy So off we went He said park here you cannot turn at the bottom.Don't worry if we can drive in we can drive out.Suits me he said laughing. We looked at the job and then got back in the car.Now the thing George didn't know was Daffy went as fast backwards as she did forward I don't know if he did there was not the accompanying smell but his face was a deathly pale grey.Wots up George don't you like going back at 50mph It steers like a combine harvester. The other thing that does this is an Austin Champ. He circulated a Memo that said something along the lines of Don't ride with me He's crackers ;D :farmer:
