The first birth has to be announced, I am so proud ;D :chook:
Now , as it is a first with chicks for us - when do they need food ? I put chick crumbs on a plate and a shallow dish with water near the door of the run but not in the house, but will any little ones be able to get out of the nesting box? the walls look pretty high. Will mum help them in and out? Do I put the slats in or leave them out?
How long does mum stay in the safe house with them altogether? Help, please!
:chook: :&>

Congratulations Kerstin, well done that chook. :bouquet:

cant answer all your questions - ours are "test-tube babies" ie incubated. but they wont need food or water for 24 ours anyway.
maybe they'll need a little ramp with lots of slats on?!
ps Congratulations!!

congratulations - at least you didnt miss it.
chicks wont need food for at least 24 hours, after that, ad-lib chick crumbs - mum will show them what to do. as for water stick a couple of pebbles in so they dont drown (even if it's shallow, they can still drown apparently!).
cant imagine what the iglu looks like so cant offer any advice on whether or not they can get out - sorry

Thanks, everyone. Madam showed her wee one how to nibble grass already. I'm surprised how high it could jump at a few hours old! thanks for the tip with the water!
I'll post a link to lovely photo soon. :&>
