we have lots of these in the garden.  Not seen any flowers on them -  the stems are purple-ish   

any ideas ?

I'd say common hogweed (so not the scary kind), but this plant family is tricksy so wait for someone to agree  ;D

Google 'common hogweed uk images' and you'll see that's it.

I think that this looks the same as the weed that grows in my garden and the lane verges.

I thought that it was Common. hogweed, too.

Another vote for hogweed.
