Thinking of buying a log splitter as have quite a few large trees to fell. Looking at Ktm 14 ton as available on eBay. Anyone any experience of that or any others. It's a tractor mounted type.
Not really used one much before so any advice welcomed before I part with the folding stuff.

The KTM one looks ok. well made, my only concern with that type is are you going to use it for big rounds on the ground? - tree trunk sized stuff, 18" dia or more, stuff you don't really want to pick up, if so great.
But for all the rest of the smaller stuff you are going to be on your knees working, unless you can lift it with the linkage and lock it up at a decent height, maybe have a look at how high your linkage lifts and work out if you would be comfortable working at that height for a few hours.
The alternative is a horizontaly mounted one where the ram goes left to right rather than up and down.
If you are splitting a lot you want to try and avoid repetitive lifting.

we use a browns 12t tractor mounted and it splits fine

Thanks for your replies gents. I took the plunge and bought the Ktm , due to a busy life I have only split one log, and it seems fine. I will report further with pics once I've had chance to do a couple of hours with it.
It was available with larger base and I've already realised that is a desirable addition, I think I shall be making my own.
