Title: Does anyone use a Hori-Hori?
Post by: Fleecewife on April 27, 2017, 03:29:11 pm
I just bought a Hori-hori, which is a Japanese gardening tool for Bonsai as well as full sized gardening jobs.  I ordered it from Italy on Tuesday evening, and it arrived this afternoon, Thursday, 24 hours after it was dispatched.  I'm amazed.
The reason I ask if anyone uses one is that it looks a bit alarming, a bit more Banzai! than Bonsai!  It's like a hunting/camping knife, and can be used as a trowel, a weeder, for cutting through small roots, hoiking plants out of pots and suchlike.
S'pose I'd better go and try it out  :tired:

Funny you should mention chopping off my fingers - a couple of weeks ago I bought a shiny new herb chopper.  I was taking off the blade guard, didn't realise how lethally sharp the thing was and nearly chopped the end off two fingers.  Blood everywhere.  Just about healed up now  :innocent:

Mr F says not and I haven't dared use it yet.  I'll get him to try it out first

I love my hori-hori, good for getting potbound plants out of pots and as I've found this week dividing perennials. Do have to be careful with it though.....

Thank you Rhea.  I was beginning to think I'd bought something which might not be any use  :garden:   It's about time I divided some perennials

A nice looking type of weapon.
I did buy a machete for gardening but keeping it razor sharp enough and swinging it just right takes practice: although I saw a chap in jamaica 'mow' 2 acres of rough ground with one over a couple of days.
I also bought a cheap bowie knife but somehow never remember to put the sheath on my belt or take it with me and end up just usng the lock-knife that's always in my pocket - or the spade.
OH also has fleecewife's issues. I bought her a lock-knife and the day she opened the parcel and undid the bade she cut herself. So I have a spare knife.

Reminds me, years ago was on a mountain road in Venezuela and a tree had blown down accross the road. There were about half a dozen vehicles on each side and each produced a bloke wielding a machete to chop up the tree! It seemed everyone had one!

My memory of a machete is from Barbados.  There we were puttering along two-up on an ancient, on-it's-last-legs moped, when a very large local chap stepped out in front of us from amongst the sugar cane, machete in hand, and politely asked us for 2 dollars.  Well, we could hardly refuse  :o .  Trying to make a fast getaway after we'd coughed up just couldn't happen on that moped.

OK, so I'm a bit late to this thread, but I never go anywhere (garden-wise) without mine!

I find mine particularly useful for chopping up brassica stalks for the compost heap.  My little penknife just isn't up to the job  :roflanim: .  The hori-hori is heavy to cart around all the time though, but mostly it's with me.
