Title: Tiny black "eggs"?
Post by: Shinding on April 25, 2017, 01:03:17 pm
I've just found some tiny black, possibly eggs, on a grape vine in our polytunnel - they're about the size of a full stop - anyone have any idea what they could be? Can't see any insects but I'm just going to have another look with a magnifying glass!

Are they on the leaves or the bark? All gathered together in a clump, or spread out?

Hi Possum, sorry for the delayed reply. I've tried taking photos but I can't download them as they're too big (even if I zip the file).

The eggs (if that's what they are) are a little spread out (not in clumps) mostly about a cm from each other under the leaves and on the stems. There aren't loads but more like a sprinkling but they're quite easy to see (look a little like black pepper). I can't see lots of fine webs so I'm hoping that means it isn't red spider mite.

Upload them to photobucket or dropbox and then post the image location.

If you click on each image so it's on it's own screen then right click on it and copy 'image location' you can use the picture icon to embed it into the message as i did. Only down side is you lose the enlargement option that dropbox had. Looking at these the spots aren't uniform (IMO) enough to be eggs.. so likely droppings?

I wonder if they're caterpillar frass.  Try a Chris Packham and pick one off and squash it - see what comes out.

I'm no good at the technology either. :(  Can't access the photos, I'm afraid. But then I can't post any either. Perhaps there should be an emoticon for a wrinkly person with limited IT skills? ::)
