Title: Which weaners to tag?
Post by: PK on April 19, 2017, 06:03:06 pm
For those who produce regular litters, do you usually tag (or equivalent) all of them including those sold on for meat, or just those destined for breeding? I understand the regulations, but am interested in what others do.

You will need to tag (or slap mark) any heading to the abattoir, I haven't sold any on for breeding, but I *think* if under 12 months they can move on spray mark

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along to correct me :)

I only tag pigs that are going to either the auction or the abattoir, the rest move between farms on coloured spray marks, this is perfectly acceptable. New owners will fit their own tags if or when required. When I used to buy weaners at the auction I would remove the tags and fit my own, as they had to have one of my own tags fitted to go to the abattoir.
The only pigs that would normally retain their original tags are pedigree breeding animals, as this has the unique number that matches the BPA herd book.

no, slap each pig when they're in the trailer to head to the abbatoir.

Am I right in thinking your talking pedigree weaners ? if so we tattoo the whole litter (depending on your breed some breeds are notched) and then any sold on for breeding are also tagged weaners sold for meat are just tattooed.

Yes, pedigree litters were in mind, but whether to trouble to tag those sold for meat. It looks like most don't. Thanks.

Ours are usually all tagged as some of our buyers want to print off the meat certificate so the pig needs to be fully traceable back to the birth notes.
