Title: Ivy
Post by: graemeatwellbank on April 15, 2017, 07:33:02 pm
I have a small area of land/trees/walls which is overrun with Ivy.
I will start to remove it gradually but wondered if it was OK to put cut-off Ivy in your compost heap?
Thank you,
Graeme.

Please, before you start chopping at it, make sure there are no birds nesting within it!

I have bits growing from my compost that were expectantly well composted in the plastic Dalek composters .  So I don't recommend composting as a way of killing it .

If you strip it off in late summer / early autumn & leave it a few weeks to dry a little more It burns very well once you get it going .

It's pointless spraying SBK on a mature plant & a total waste of time & chemicals .
Treating any new growth to a sprayed on dose of SBK mixed with diesel is a recommended way of killing it off as the plant is at it's weakest  . .

Thanks for the responses. I thought it would not go well in a compost heap.
I have identified several birds nests and will not interfere with them. Plenty of other sections to work on first.

Good point - they do! Much the best way of getting rid of it. :)
