Title: Maran with dull shelled eggs
Post by: Croftwoman on April 01, 2017, 01:48:36 pm
One of two young copper black Marans I have has produced some eggs with no coloured final 'glaze' - should I be concerned?

We had this with one of our Marans (Clara) for one year, first spotted eggs then no colour eggs and she then went on to produce shell-less eggs, but after the Winter layoff surprisingly things returned to normal.

There are quite often a few hiccups with the first eggs laid but it generally sorts itself out in a week or so.  If it doesn't I wouldn't breed from that hen, even if the eggs laid are good enough for use in the house.

Thanks for the reassuring replies - she's still in her first year of lay and have no intention of hatching her eggs, so I'll not worry too much!

One of my Pullets will sometimes lay an egg with no colour just speckles, but her following egg is normally very dark.
