Title: Wounded hen
Post by: Liz Kershaw on March 31, 2017, 06:52:57 pm
I've just found a wound under the wing of one of my hens (it's a cockerel wound). I've put her in a separate coop with one of her friends to keep her company but could do with some advice on what to clean the wound with and help protect it from infection. Doesn't look infected at the moment and she is otherwise well.

I swab wounds with diluted Savlon and pure cottonwool until I'm happy it's clean, dab with kitchen roll, let it dry thoroughly then spray with antibiotic spray.  If it's a deep wound I'd then wait until that's dry and spray over the top with plastic wound spray.  I'd then check daily for around three days to make sure it stayed dry, with no sign of puffiness or weeping.

Google 'poultry purple spray', it's a very useful product.

We use warm salt water and cotton wool.
