Hi
I'm new to pig keeping and I was wondering if you could offer me an idiot proof guide to tagging/identification of bought in pigs and home bred pigs.
I have Tamworth pigs and I'm in Scotland.
Some of the piglets o bought just have a tattoo, others have a tattoo and a tag. Some of my sows have 2 tags with different numbers on, some have 1 tag and no obvious tattoo but they might be tattooed as they are pedigree.
Thanks :-)

Pedigree pigs should have been birth notified and have either a tattoo or notch depending on the breed. I think BPA pig breeders are also allowed to double tag pedigree pigs if they apply to the BPA to do that rather than tattoo or notch.
Without the above they shouldn't be sold as pedigree or marketed as a "saddleback pork" for example as there is no traceability.
Pigs under one year of age can move without tags and a temporary paint mark will suffice.
Pigs sold through auctions must be tagged.
If you buy pigs under the age of one you then tag when you send to slaughter with your own tag.

If your pigs are tattooed/tagged, they are hopefully birth notified with BPA. Were they sold to you as pedigree?
The breeder should have done the notification. Get back to him/her if you don't know.
