Title: Poultry feed
Post by: Frieslandfilly on June 14, 2010, 11:16:37 pm
I am interested to know where people get their feed from, the more chickens I get, the more i keep thinking about the costs, do people generally get feed from the local farm stores or is there anywhere else I should be looking?

We own a shop so we get ours from Batleys which is a cash and carry. Not sure how much others pay but if you have one near you, you could approach them. ATM they seem to be letting the general public in on a regular basis anyway. Most just say they are 'breeders' and get away with it....

I get my pellets from a local farm shop, which is actually on a farm and the cheapest around here. The guy who runs the feed shop in Cupar buys his stuff there so I've heard..  (his markup for oystershell grit is 500%, he bags it up into little portions at 3.50 each) My grain I get from a farm along the road, which is half the price from the shop mixed grain. I only get wheat, but could get barley, too, but the ducks don't like anything but wheat. :&>

I live a couple of miles from the domestic fowl trust and tend to go there. used to buy the 5kg bags when we only had a few hens but have wised up to the fact that its 50% more expensive doing that! so now go for 20kg bags and have a cup of tea in the cafe while I'm there  ;)

We use Crop Services(country corner), at Pittscottie, or Rodgers in Cupar

Until I went to St Monans Vet hospital with Freckles  I didn't realise just how big Fife is - it's ginormous!  Well compared to teh Wee County it is anyway  ;D
