Title: Multi vehicle motor insurance including a pickup
Post by: GribinIsaf on November 30, 2016, 08:42:51 pm
I would be interested to know if anyone has motor insurance through a mainstream supplier that includes a pickup.

We have a pickup and a "normal" car which are currently insured through a multi-vehicle policy with Aviva.  Renewal time has come round and looking for quotes from Admiral and Direct Line in both cases the computer says no due to the pickup.

I will check with NFU etc but I guess they will be more expensive than the increased amount from Aviva - which is a mainstream company that can cope with pickups for some reason.

Direct Line do (Ford Ranger).  They try to push you towards their van insurance, but keep it set to car and put your reg number in and it should pick it up,

Another vote for Direct Line - we have our L200 with them and they're reasonably-priced.

We recently bought a pickup and had the same problems with insurance. OH tried NFU and they were double the price :-)

Just for the record I have run the pickup (which is an L200) through Direct Line online using both the car section and the van section and both times got a NO.  I rang a real person and they told me they would simply be entering info in the same way I did on line and would therefor get the same result.

We DO have a policy with Aviva and the renewal price does not seem too bad but I always try to compare with other companies at that point.  This time I think I will just end up paying - there is only so much time available for entering all that stuff on line or waiting for phone calls to be answered.

I have had the same situation with my L200 & my wifes car.   Found the best option for me was recommended from the L200 owners forum.  " A-Plan Insurance 01635-879905." Can talk to a real person who knows what they are on about.

(No connection with these, other than as a satisfied customer).

Used to be with Direct Line, but never had much faith in them - "the system says no"

Hope this helps.

I have a multicar policy which includes our Hilux with Admiral.  Once one of their people told me that they didn't insure pick-ups but when I told him they had been insuring mine for years he found a way to make it work.

Yes, oor wullie, I tried the Admiral website and it said No which shows that the important thing is to talk to a human being who is not plugged into a computer.  As I guess we are all budget minded it is the skill of doing this with a mainstream (ie less expensive) organisation rather than a specialised (more expensive) one.

I do ours through a local broker without a problem - probably because down here every second car is a pick up - I probably pay slightly more than i would sorting it out myself online but the lack of hassle is worth it.

NFU will be more expensive than average , and back in the day when the company i worked for had an NFU business policy when one of the vehicles had a crash they lived up to the alternative meaning of their acronym.. if you get my drift

Just updating my own query from two years ago!

Renewal time coming round again for a multi-vehicle policy for a pickup and a car.

Really really hard to find a website that will accept the pickup reg AND make it part of a multicar policy.

Just stumbled across www.esuremulticar.com (http://www.esuremulticar.com) and got an online quote £30 cheaper than our renewal notice from Aviva - not a lot but it is the principle that counts.  So either Aviva will drop their price when I ring them or I should be able to go elsewhere without too much hassle.

Have you tried NFU?  They’re pretty competitive for car insurance - and they’re used to farm vehicles!

Just in case anyone is interested......

Insurance for one pickup and one volvo:

renewal quote from Aviva - £406

online quote from Esure - £372

phone call to Aviva  "We don't actually price match but I can make some adjustments...... how about £372?"

I use Adrian Flux - the Ford Ranger (taxed as Light Goods) and the Defender (taxed as Car) are on a multi-vehicle policy.

As the Defender is modified, when I was getting the quote, I was explaining the mods. I was impressed that the questions they were asking about these mods were sensible ones, and not simply someone reading from a script.

HTH,

Chris

For my Hilux, the NFU quote was twice the cost of my renewal premium, which I then managed to half again by shopping around.  Extortionate!
I think the lady who quoted me was quite embarrassed to be fair.  They also had higher excesses.
