Hi all.
I think my female duck has prolapsed. We've had her in a bucket of warm water and can see the ball is actually attached to her in side. I initially though it was an egg but it isnt. Anything we can do for her? Thanks in advance.

I've not had a duck prolapse, only a chicken, but I suspect its much the same.
Clean the prolapse and put either some honey or Prep H cream on it (they both help to shrink the prolapse) and then gently push it back in. At first it will seem difficult but all of a sudden it will pop back into place.
You may have to do this several times a day at first but eventually it should stay put of its own accord.
There are videos of how to do it all on youtube
Good luck

No experience of duck prolapses TracyC, but plenty with chickens. The correct treatment in their case is to use manuka honey to lubricate your finger and the vent and then push the prolapse back in. Leave your finger in place and let her muscles reposition the section. Repeat as necessary.
Afraid I don't agree with the use of Prep H as in theory it can worsen the condition. We have never used it.

To be honest I have never used it either but I have seen plenty of others recommend it.

Thank you both we only have normal honey. Does that make a difference? Thanks.
-
Tracy, I did it with 'normal' honey and it worked ok.

:fc: thanks

When this happened to one of my hens a few years ago my vet said to liberally sprinkle the prolapse with sugar, if done quickly enough it should shrink it right down so you can get it back in.

We've used Prep H with great success. Also Anusol (I think that's what it's called, or something similar sounding).
Just be really, really slow and gentle.

Tracy, how did you get on with your duck?
-
Oh what a night. Well we bathed her and tried to clean her up. It was in a right state and she was in obvious pain. My husband said we needed to do the right thing by her so we let her go. It was the first time for me holding a girl when we lost her so mixed feelings all round. Thanks for checking.

Aww, poor duck but you did the right thing

That's the rubbish bit of keeping poultry and livestock. It's your job to make sure they have the best possible life and that includes ensuring they have the best possible end.

Our sentiments exactly.
