I might be off, but if I saw this I'd think it was a plum. Is this in an orchard? It could be a wild version rather than a cultivar but it looks as if it's in that family.

It's in our back garden,  next to two old apple trees.

Interesting that you say damson .. .as I was talking to my next door neighbour last night and he says he's sure there used to be a damson tree around there somewhere.
