Re: paperwork I understand that this will be provided by the breeder and that I do not fill in a movement licence. Do I need to do anything when I collect the weaners in relation to formal paperwork? Any tips welcome...

If you've got your CPH and herd number, you're fine. The seller will give you a copy of the movement licence for your records.
-
Thanks Rosemary - we have that all sorted so it looks like we are all stations go. ;D

All you need do once you have your CPH and herd number is pick up your pigs with the AML animal movement licence from the breeder you'll fill it in with them then send a copy off to your local trading standards within 6 days I think from memory. Then enjoy! You do also have to record any drugs you give them and when you move them onto your holding they start a 20 day standstill on your holding.

You need a movement book & medicine book. These can be from your local trading standards office, if you ring them uop they will post them out. Not sure if they are available on the web.
Your movement license needs to be sent off withing 3 days to your local trading standards office. You need to send the top copy in ( white sheet )
When you've done all that sit back & enjoy your pigs :D

Thanks mmm thought was 6 days but wasn't sure.

I moved some off last wednesday, thats how i knew, sheer fluke. Must admit the form was late being sent 3 days is a bit quick isnt it?

Do you have to record veterinary visits and have them sign the drugs book?
-
The vet didnt ask to see my medicine book when he came, & trading standards didnt say anything about having the vet sign the book.
-
Haven't had anyone visit mine yet and I've had them4 months.

H,
TS have a risk based assessment process which picks out some newbies at random together with some old hands and these get visited.
If when they visit they find things wrong, then you get more frequent visits, everything ok and you will go back into the Random pool.
Many pig keepers never get a visit.
Both your medical and movement book can be in any written form (Whilst TS may do versions, you do not need to use them, though it can be simpler just to use them) and can alternately held on computer providing you can print immediately if a surprise visit happens.
TS are generally interested in movement, we have never had our medical book examined - the latter is more an FSA thing, and they don't do visits they rely on random testing at the slaughterhouse.
The vet does not need to sign your medical book.
Medical records come under The Welfare of Farmed Animals (England)
Regulations 2000 (S.I. 2000 No. 1870).
Schedule 1,
paragraph 7 states that:
A record shall be maintained of –
(a) any medicinal treatment given to animals; and
(b) the number of mortalities found on each
inspection of animals carried out in accordance with
any of the following provisions.
Para 45 says
45 Only authorised veterinary medicinal products
should be used. You must keep full records of all
medicines used, including where it was bought. You
must also keep records for at least three years of:
• the date you treated the animals;
• the identity and quantity of medicine used; and
• which animal or group of animals you treated.

I wondered because thats another thing we have to have done here, all adds to the vet cost 2 seconds to sign a book another 20 euros!!!

Thanks Oaklandpigs I've been expecting them but nothing yet.. Fingers crossed it stays that way if they're anything like the planners!
