Title: Greetings, embarking on self sufficiency ish smallholding
Post by: Moss on May 24, 2010, 01:49:07 pm
Greetings All,

My husband and I are embarking on a self sufficiency ish smallholding begining on 1st August this year. We are moving from Sheffield to a tiny village in the Yorkshire Dales.

Welcome to the forum from a 'not quite as sunny as yesterday' Clackmannan - not really a smallholder, I have ducks and chickens, dogs and a cat.  Good luck in your new venture - some more info on what your plans are would be interesting and some photos too.

Hi Annie,

We have dug six, what seem to me, giant veg patches (1meter by 4meter) as our first endevour. Next come the chickes, hopefuly Sussex and Rhode Island Red as I hear they are both ok eating birds after they're done laying, also a few ex battery hens. Then come the pigs, we are hoping for two large blacks but we don't yet know what rare breeds are available in our area.
We are also hoping to put up a poly-tunnel but as we are in the Yorkshire Dales National Park we don't yet know the rules on this. If anyone knows anything about it we'd be glad of the advice.
I look forward to bending everyone's ears as we embark on our adventure.
Cecilia.

Hi Cecilia

welcome from very hot and sunny worcestershire -

we are fairly new to all of this but have had chooks for a while. recently added goats for milk (and because I think they are cute!)
we are growing veggies this year - I say 'we' -  hubby hates gardening but, bless him, will do all the heavy stuff.
on top of this we have an orchard with 70 plum trees and use this for wine making  :yum:

good luck with your new endeavour - exciting isn't it?!!!

Lisa

Hi,

Thanks everyone. You've all made me feel very welcome.

Lisa, we are the same, I do the growing and my husband Colin does the digging/ making raised beds e.t.c.
Colin has the whole self sufficiency thing planned out, crop rotation, pig rotation, making our own bio fule!! I'm just concentrating on my plants and really looking forward to getting my hens and pigs. I'm not one for planning so I'll leave that to him.

Really great to meet you all. I look forward to chatting soon.

Cecilia

Sounds wonderful, but dont let Colin plan to minutely, as once you get pigs well ........ they are so addictive
