Title: shearing self shedding ewes?
Post by: JedM on May 04, 2016, 01:21:51 pm
I keep my 7 Suffolk mules with 2 Wiltshire horn ewes (self shedding), and was just thinking ahead about shearing.  Should I get them all sheared together or leave the Wiltshire horns to do it themselves?
Sorry, probably a newbie question, and there also isn't much fleece to shear on the wiltshire ewes!

Leave the wilts be---they will shed their wool when it needs shedding . The mules don't have this option as you will decide for them
Trying to shear shedding animals is also very hard work as the ''fleece'' sticks to the body until it's ready to drop

Thank you.  This is the first year I have had self shedding ewes, but thought I would ask as the shearer is coming anyway (and only charges £1.50 per sheep!)
