Hi all based in Northern Ireland and I am looking for pedigree ryeland sheep and a breeder to buy from willing to travel to the main land for good ewes and unrelated ram ... Wanting these sheep to show and to breed thanks in advance
-
Contact Chris Smyth at Barony Coloured Ryelands - he's chair of the Scottish Ryeland Group and a very good breeder. He will be able to help I'm sure.
-
Thanks very much will try that route any pointers on keeping this wonderful breed I'm more used to commercial breeds
-
That would be much appreciated ????
-
Have you tried the breed society? http://www.ryelandfbs.com/ (http://www.ryelandfbs.com/) I'm sure they would be more than happy to put you in touch with breeders
-
Have emailed them with no reply unfortunately :huff:

Things seem to move very slowly in the breed society world I'm afraid. ;D
-
Make sure you get some from a breeder who selects for easy lambing. A friend of mine bought some three years ago and every year we struggle to lamb them.....even tried a different tup this time, but so far one lambed and it needed help. It seems some pedigree breeders select for imo the wrong traits

The AGM is on Saturday here in Edinburgh. I guess Dot is busy with that.

My five ewes including two first timers, produced five sets of twins with little intervention. I helped one of the first timers a little as she had an enormous lamb, in fact I was surprised to see an enormous twin an hour later. I have three ewes lambs for sale but I believe they have gone already assuming the deposit arrives. Good luck.

Hi Chrissy, I spoke to someone from Northern Ireland this morning who was looking for Ryelands - was that you?
-
The Ryeland Flock Book soc has an active Facebook page / you could try and join and ask there? If not one of us can advertise for you. Ryelands are lovely - really rewarding as they let you get familiar enough with them to get to know their personalities.
-

Small update folks went to view a flock today from the one and only breeder in the north of Ireland but was quoted mad money :raining: I've fallen in love with them but 500 a piece seems a lot of coin
-
Sounds like it will be well worth your while importing a few then!

Yes I think your correct   :innocent:

That's a lot of money, too much unless they've won a lot. You could pick up four good examples for that price with some haggling from a decent breeder.

Chrissykelly482 - how are the Ryelands working out? I'm in NI too and have been reading up on the breed. Seem to be quite rare over here. Would be interested to hear how they are working out for you - and whether you may have some available at some time?

I charge the upset prices for my breeding quality pedigree Southdown lambs, which is currently £90 + cost of registration if required. Does the Ryeland breed society have a similar scheme? If I were into showing it would probably be considerably more but I breed for a good all round animal so appearance is last on the list.
