Title: Cost of Agricultural Building (20m x 10m)
Post by: Margery McGowan on April 18, 2016, 12:38:06 pm
Hi - wonder if anyone can help?  I'm looking to build an agricultural building to let me tie horses up safely for the grooming, vet, farrier, etc. and also provide hay storage in the winter months.   Eventually might create a stable or two within the building for emergencies too.  Can anyone give me an indication of costs for such a building and also whether the steel portal frame kits or brick / breezeblock is best.  I have a field right at the top of a hill near Dollar, Central Scotland so it gets very very windy so need something really sturdy and heavy that won't be wrecked in the wind.  Also can you suggest decent companies to do the build?  Hopefully someone can help.

Can't help with costs or a builder, but can offer experience on a windy hilltop in Herefordshire.  Our lambing shed was built about 50 years ago and is still going strong.  It's a pole barn (telegraph poles with 6" x 3" rafters and a galvanised tin roof).  If I were getting it built now I'd put Yorkshire boarding above the gateways and have solid gates (we just tie ply over the front of the gates for Winter).  The only thing the original builder made a mistake on was to have the "back" wall almost solid.  One night when we had a Force 11 gale coming straight into the shed the wind had nowhere to go except up and the roof blew off - complete with electrics.  It now has two large gaps at the top and doorways we can open if necessary and we haven't had any problems since, even in winds of over 100 mph last Winter.

Try Patersons at South Alloa. They do bespoke buildings and seem to have a good reputation.

Robinsons or Shufflebottoms are very good. However the size you are looking for wont be cheap after shed cost, Groundworks and construction. At least £15k I would guess.

A steel building that size will cost about £10k + vat.  Founds and erection another £5k.  You might be able to do some or all of the work yourself depending in how confident you are.

Look in the ads. Section of the Scottish Farmer as the main companies usually advertise there.

Also find a builder or company thats worked with the council planning department and get them to do the liaison with planning department.  Takes the stress out of things.

If it is permanent and for horses (= non agricultural) you will almost certainly need full PP...
