Looking on line for something that would kill greenery sprouting all over my gravel track that would not harm my hens I cam across a suggestion that 50% vinegar/water as a spray would do it. Really? Anyone tried this.

I use boiling water and it kills the weeds no end , they shrivel up because of the heat, do be careful of splashes though!

Thanks WBF but it is a very long drive that needs weeding! :farmer:

On. Just seen there has been a thread on this already.

Buy a bottle of vinegar and give it a go .
Shoiuld it work It's cheaper to buy it from a cash & carry fruit & veg type place if they have it in gallon sized containers as for me it was about 1/3 rd the price for the same volume as against bottles or the supermarket prices.
if it does not work Road grit rock salt or a higher grade salt in a strong solution will .
I discovered this when walking along a well salted road ....nothing grows along the edges for about 14 inches back from the road edge for several months till the plants start to creep back or it gets a new dose of wind borne seed etc. .
Salt has a greater toxic effect than Round up & you only have to keep the chickens off Round up till it is dried If I recall correctly ( do check it out with the appropriate supplier /manufactures guidance rather than rely on hearsay .

we will give both a go and report back. Have tried roundup on one area today. There is a rock salt bin outside my gate. Would it be very, very wrong to try some :innocent:

Yes Vinegar is a good weed killer, i actually mix salt in with them as well this can help stave off slugs and other insects.

Add some washing up liquid as well, as a wetting agent, and it works even better.
