Title: Advice on siting Red Diesel Tank in farm yard
Post by: LouiseG on January 13, 2016, 08:31:26 pm
Hi,
Does anyone have any knowledge of the regulations on this please?
Are the rules similar to a domestic oil tank? i.e. not within 3m of a hedge or building in case of fire, has to be a bunded tank etc.

Any advice or words of wisdom would be gratefully received thank you.

I can't comment on regulations,  but a bunded system is wise none the less. If you get a fracture in your tank and get a fuel spill you could get into a lot of bother with the EA.

Balmoral tanks have a good " guide to siting " on their website.

You can have upto 1500 litres and there are no restrictions other than using 'common sense' to stop any potential leaks being an environmental disaster.

Just make sure its high enough to fill whatever vehicle you have - and its best to keep it in sight of the house or as far from public access as possible. And try to make it string enough so that if you do knock it - it dont fall over. :)

I have a single bunded tank - but there are lots of second hand double bunded ones for sale that have had heating oil in and cant be installed in a house again - but can be used or fitted privately.

I do not know enough about the regs but access for deliveries and re-fueling is obviously necessary and somewhere reasonably out of site from prying eyes or if it can be within easy earshot and view from your house I would say is a deterrent (my OH's farm has just been hit and lost over 5000 litres in one go and that is inside a building   >:(

Sadly, a metal cage can be a useful deterrent.  We were told a tank shouldn't be under phone or power lines.
