Had one sheep looking a bit imperfect (!), with the tips of his woolly fleece having 'come off'.... anyway, following TAS firm advice I didn't guess, but got the vet in, who diagnosed lice..... Since a recent FEC test suggested / recommended worming, we were advised to inject Panomec...
We treated 7 lambs and 2 older wethers since they are and will be spending the winter together....
Anyway, just writing to sound out the experience of others... our lambs had an immediate reaction to the injection, going wobbly, either bucking or buckling, really distressing to see, but all over in about 30 seconds....
Has this happened to any of you? Is there an explanation for it? And, more to the point, does anyone recommend a spot-on product (which wont stop us processing the fleece next summer....)
Sorry for lengthy script... but also have a second query... one lamb very lame, off foot completely.... after 24 hours we brought him in, gave alamycin la (sp?) and metacam.... since vet was visiting she had a look and couldn't see anything in particular (lamp has poor hooves with some shelley and some split at top of hoof) - all blue sprayed copiously.... anyway, 48 hrs later no change at all.... foot not warm, no part of foot seems sensitive for the lamb, he's eating fine, but wont put weight on it.... any ideas? Can't treat for another day or so cos of what given so far I think.....

Lame lamb - have you soaked the foot to get it really clean and see if there's a thorn somewhere? The meds will take a while to work through - I suggest keeping under cover so that the hoof hardens enough to bear weight. If the horn layer is compromised it'll take several months to grow out.

Never used PANOMEC looked it up on NOAH no mention of treating lice in sheep ? pigs and cattle yes but states it may not kill all , CROVECT for quick kill ( DYSECT quick kill but can stain the fleece ) COOPERS SPOT - ON kills slowly over a month . IN adverse reactions it say may cause pain / discomfort but short lived . The lame lamb could be anything muscle/ ligament / joint / infection so ab and painkiller , anti inflammatory all bases covered

Did you use the injection straight from the fridge by any chance?

Meds not from fridge - so guessing not simply a shock... Will be patient with the lameness....and will try to wash foot out well....and will get in some crovect....

I have always found Coopers Spot-on to be the most effective and easy to apply as well (both goats and sheep). Bottle lasts for ages... Why would you inject if you can use a pour-on?

From what I've read "pain is intense but transient after sub cu injection. It does list biting lice, sucking lice.

Coopers spot on it is then..... (vet will even supply modest amounts)....
Lamb still lame, just had some zactran, horn layer very compromised so consigned to bed rest with a couple of pals - HATE locking them in though...
