Hi what disinfectant should I use to clean an aluminium trailer please?

Hi,
it needs to be an approved disinfectant to satisfy the laws around animal movement. You could give your agri merchant or country store rep a call and see whats on offer. I use Battles as a general rule which is black in colour so sometimes called "black disinfectant". A little goes along way as you need to dilute it. I clean the aluminium trailer with it as well as the concrete floor of the lambing shed and use it as a boot wash.
For biosecurity though you need one on this list. http://disinfectants.defra.gov.uk/. (http://disinfectants.defra.gov.uk/.) I use the Bio-kill as it is made locally.

never use disinfectant always a hot jetwash and soap. Unless you are sharing a wagon or have issues Hot water and soap should suffice.

I think if you get a check up from AH they wouldn't agree that this would suffice

I presume your talking about not damaging the trailer - as anything that says - 'kills germs' on the tin will do that.
Just rinse it out properly with tap water or field water after cleaning - be fine.

High pressure washer . When the last F & M outbreak was on going and all trailers were inspected at the auction , only pressure washing done

Virkon is good stuff but you need to be REALLY careful with the powder .. nasty stuff to inhale. Its usually worth paying more for the tablets as it cuts the risk right down

Bio security is a funny one, I suppose it depends on how many animals you are dealing with and type. Pig farmers are generally ahead of the curve on this (because they have to be) compared to cattle or sheep etc and obviously if you are fattening the odd weaner for the freezer you might not feel the need to embrace all the regulation and best practices of the industry.
For what it is worth the bepx and red tractor schemes (I use those two because I know them) are similar

I use a normal car wash detergent, then rinse, then FAM 30, then rinse again on my trailer plus arks, troughs etc between batches of pigs.
It is important to remember that disinfectant is not a detergent and should only be used on already cleaned surfaces. If you are transporting pigs it is particularly important to remember this as their feces (as in humans) contains fats that are difficult to break down.
Steam cleaning is exactly that, a 'cleaning' process. It is not a recognised form of disinfectant and as posted above you should only use one of the approved chemicals noting the dilution and contact time required.
