Title: Information on eartags/slapmarking
Post by: WinslowPorker on April 14, 2010, 09:45:04 am
Hi guys,

We have got these 6 pigs that are doing extremely well now and are particulalry fond of bananas and apples (is it wrong to laught at a pig when it looks at you with an apple in its mouth?? ::)) but what i want to know is the process of marking the pigs and what information should be on them, let me clarify my situation:

we bought 6no 3 month old weaners from a local farm
we have a Parish Holding number
I have read that we need a 'herd number' - so where do we get that from? should it be from the people we brought them from?
do you have to send this information when you order a slapmarker so you get the right info?

i just want to make sure i am doing anything right and yes it may be a little premature as the squeelers arent going until June, but i am the type of person that  likes to be prepared.

Hot cross buns for the piggies tonight

You need to contact your local Animal Health office to register and get a herd mark. Contact details and all the info on marking pigs etc can be found in A Guide For New Keepers Pigs which you should have been sent. If not go to the defra website and type the title into the query box on the Home page and it should take you to a pdf file of the publication which you can print off.

Agree with all mr.pig has said + if they are pedigree check on the requirements of the particular society.

Also check where you intend to get them slaughtered on their requirements.

For slap markers the only details you need to provide (to us anyway) are herd number xx 1234 and size of characters required (10 or 15mm) depending on the size of the pig.

Thanks

Almost forgot - also register with BPEX so you can do the online FCI forms when it comes to slaughter time.
