I have been taking our dogs to the beach to play ball. The collie- spaniel X has taken to going into the water and dipping her tummy in. This is after about half hour of playing. Someone has suggested dogs do that if they have heart trouble, has anyone ever heard of this ? Any ideas why she could be doing it, its not actually hot here. :dog:

If you're worried she has heart trouble, a vet with a stethoscope would be your best bet.
She may just like the water, or may get hot when running about.
Any breathlessness, coughing, pale or blue gums and tongue, or tiring excessively when exercising are more reliable signs of a heart problem which should prompt a vet visit.

No signs of anything like that, she comes back and wants to play again. Thats what l cant fathom out.
No distress whatsoever ? She is 6 yrs of age, always active, typical collie traits.

My collie lays in any water she can find .... a cooling effect I'm sure as she always races for the stream when she has done lots of running.

Probably cooling off if she's fit and well otherwise. If you put a wet blanket over a hot dog you're actually sealing in the heat, best thing is to lay them on a wet blanket or towel tummy down.

My dog does this after running around. So did Meg, my last dog- and she was doing it for 14 years.

My Jock jumps in the water trough after running around - never thought anything of it other than he's cooling down!

All the collies and collie cross dogs I've had cool down by lying or sitting in water.

My daughters collies are infatuated with water too. Maybe its a collie thing ! ????

My welsh collies after playing jump in water to cool down. Strange how my beardie doesn't though.

My Flat Coat loves the water and jumps in any chance he gets!
Our working lab does swim but more or less only when she wants to cool down.
She will go and have a run through the stream when she has finished retrieving and she is feeling hot .... even on cool days.
I think you would see other signs of her 'struggling' after exercise if it was a heart problem.

You also mentioned that she is a spaniel x my springer gets into water on every possible occasion irrespective of the weather

SPROLLIES ARE THE BEST DOGS EVER!
My black cocker spaniel has her own paddling pool in summer and jumps in and out of it all day. She's black, she's hot ;D
