A friend told me years ago to wear safety goggles - pulled tight - when chopping onions.
It works!!!!
The only problem I have been faced with the last few years is that I end up with terrible hayfever like symptoms so take antihistamines before I start. Unfortunately this year even that has not helped, so this morning I nipped to the local shop and a packet dust masks. (our local shop is an Aladdins cave and has almost everything)
Note of caution if anyone decides to try this at home. . . . don't answer the door till you have completely finished the task in hand. Ask me how I know :roflanim:

I was told by a cook I was working for recently to pop the peeled onions in a bowl of water as I did them, and then take out one at a time to chop. I didn't cry at all and you could see all the oniony tearmaking stuff swirling so it seemed to work.

My younger daughter has never forgiven me ( even after 20 years) for answering the front door to her friends, wearing motor cycle goggles. I was peeling onions for pickling!!

Try breathing through your mouth instead of your nose whilst you chop the onions, it works most of the time.
