This is Starry and her new heifer calf Una. Born a week ago today, we had to assist as after an hour the feet were still poking out so we gave them a tug and out she plopped... Starry is the best cow in the world, and such a fantastic mum. So over the moon! :excited:

Brilliant.
What is Starrys Sunday name? She looks like she will have no shortage of milk for the calf.
-
Yes, definitely cute pics. I want one

She isn't registered as far back in her genetics she has a bit of longhorn. Oof I know, she makes me wince when I see her walking about, I've never seen udders so big
-
That's a shame about the registration. Get your milking stool out ;D
-
Beautiful heifer - well done all.

One, two three.....aaww :hugcow: Good pics and a happy cow and calf  Thank you for posting.

:wave:Beautiful, it is miraculous isn't it, this birth business! Good to see happy and healthy cattle and owners, happy days!

Thanks everyone! It occurred to us yesterday that Starry used to be a dairy cow so she's had her past two calves taken away at 3 days old - having Una around all the time and suckling naturally will be a different experience for her. She is running around after her though! We're a bit shy to start milking her as we're all over the place and not sure we could maintain a routine - also still no electricity on the croft, so nowhere to store loads of milk! Not for want of trying, the crofting grants system is... arrrrrrrrgh
-
She looks like she has more milk than 1 calf will drink. If she is a biddable cow she might let you take a litre or 2 now and again without you needing
To take the calf off.

Really? That's interesting. Where did you get her from?
-
What lovely pictures - I don't have cattle but if I did ...... they look great

But Rosemary ...she has a bit of longhorn...
so all is not lost ;) ;D
Super pic's and a cracking calf.

she was originally from Staffin I believe. A lady there kept quite a big herd of milkers and made cheese which she sold internationally and won awards (if I remember correctly)! She dispersed the herd a few years ago and moved to France I think,

Shame Shetland don't have a grading up scheme.
-
Apparently she could be registered as the longhorn was sooo far back

Maybe have a word with Ruth Dalton at RBST. It's not like we have that many to play with and if she's sound and a good cow otherwise, it would seem daft (to me in the absence of any other explanation) to lose not only her but all her progeny to the breed.
