Not entirely reliable. It says we can get superfast broadband up to 200MB/s from Virgin. In reality we can get 2MB/s (on a good day) from BT copper wire. :(

I have to agree that this has only limited accuracy - it says I should be able to get up to 76Mbps but we're already on "faster" broadband from BT and while it's much better than before it's more like 15-20Mbps I think
Also, lower down the page at Right Move it says:

Ha ha ha , thats so funny..... only supplier is BT not the six listed , as for speed of 1.1mbps quoted, I wish , but 448 Kbps down and 335 Kbps up (when its dry, no wind and a full moon ! ) down loading a sky movie takes a few days and is paused when we go online .......

Have mainly abandoned BT and now on satelite. (Eye wateringly expensive but have no real option.)

agree, its not accurate. Our speed is diabolical.
Its a real problem when coming to sell a house nowadays. Do any of you use those mobile devices? That might be a better option for us

we're stuck with BT, no-one else even pretends to provide a broadband service up here but my downlaod speed is 0.5mbps and upload is 0.2mbps >:(
Fibre optic cable being laid 9 miles from us but not enough people here to warrant diverting some to us.

After 2 months (1 month with completely failed phone/internet fault) I've finally had line fault sorted out by BT and am back online. Now Max. speed supported on line 2.1mbps, average 1.9mbps. No hope of High speed broadband here - probably for ever unless by satellite!
The speed had previously slowly, as the (then) unknown fault developed, gone down to 0.16mbps at best, 0.05mbps at worst.
P.S. Actual line distance as measured by BT engineer on his clever device from me to exchange is 2 Km.

Telling me I get average 1.1Mb ........... with current BT speed test telling me it is currently 7mb that must mean most of the time it doesn't run at all! In truth speed here is usually 4-5 which is OK for most things.

Says our average speed is 0.12mbps which is probably right as its incredibly slow at times. Not sure where it gets its list of suppliers from since only BT would entertain the idea.

BT should charge by the amount of signal you get. I pay the same for a trickle as my son who lives in the real world pays for a flood.

when I worked in Dumfries recently I was provided with one of these, its was very good and more reliable than the BT connection.

Phone line providers are supposed to provide functional internet access so these speed checkers always show that we can access some form of broadband. Reality is zero access here. Satellite broadband is our only option.
Don't have mobile phone access either unless I walk a quarter of a mile from home.
I lived in Scandinavia for some years and fast broadband access was available everywhere. The UK is way behind other countries when it comes to broadband provision!

We are on a 3G mobile dongle, which isn't too bad (1 to 2 Mb/s and 15GB/mth for £18).
We recently looked into satellite packages, and though obviously expensive compared with BT, I didn't think the costs were TOO horrific. For example, a 10GB per month connection giving up to 22 Mb/s download and 6 upload now costs £29 per month plus £150 installation. It also gives unlimited downloads overnight, so if you can schedule updates etc, that saves some allowance.
All I'm saying is that prices have dropped considerably over the last 5 years, whilst performance has increased, so if you haven't checked recently, it might be worth revisiting.

The cost of Satellite broadband has fallen over the last few years. I am now in 20Mb/s download but this is not noticieably faster than the 6Mb/s speed I was on before and is probably equivalent to 2Mb/s on a landline. There is always a latency problem with satellite broadband. 10GB per month is also a quite limited data allowance.
However satellite broadband has certainly made life easier for us when no alternative option exists and so far it has been very reliable.

My new satelite broadband offers 25 MBT of data at £60 per month (and £150 set up cost) BUT in the first month i have to top that up as the data allowance was easily used up. I think the first month was heavy because I had so much updating to do as I had been off line for weeks. I cannot manage without it but £70 per month is three times my old BT rate.
