Title: Personalised Number Plates
Post by: ballingall on March 14, 2010, 09:53:31 pm
Are people who have personalised number plates simply w******, or is having a personalised number plate just an enjoyable extension to your car's personality or to your own personality/business/hobby?

Please discuss!

My brother in law has one and he's not a w*nker. However, I can't imagine having enough spare cash to buy one myself. Although if TAS 1 came up cheap, I might be tempted.  ;D

Personally I see cars are a necessary evil so when I see a car with a personalised plate, it might as well say look at me I'm a tw*t ::). If you ever go to Aberdeen they all have them ???

I would love one!! My first car was RAY and my ex was Ray, we should have kept it...If I had one it would be something a bit risky!! maybe rude!! Our camper van has a good number plate that we could sell...forgot it at the mo but nothing wrong with wanting to be different, showing your personality etc...my objection is those who look down on others who do NOT follow trends!!!

I would like to be able to afford a car that had enough value in it to make it worth having a personal number plate on

It would make it easier to remember you registration and find your car in a car park!!! Nothing more embarrassing than trying to remember your number when asked by the garage or RAC? ?    :P

An aquaintance of mine bought a Skoda new, and the registration was S61 RLS - or S 61RLS which has been on the bus in the Spice Girls movie (this was a few years ago). I think it was worth as much as the car and I'm pretty sure he sold it.

I have to confess that one of my "sitting in traffic" games is to make words from numberplates on cars around me.

I must confess I'd quite like ROS 1E or RAC something but I doubt if they would come up at a price I coudl afford.

Like HM, the plate woudl be worth more than the car. In fact, my CD player is probably worth more than the car!!

I have a personalised number. I hope you don't think I'm a W****r. i always said I hated them, but my wife bought me one as a surprise and had it fitted to my new car before I took delivery( 3 cars ago) and I have got used to it. No one knows where you are from, or if your car is new or old. it is easier to find and it annoys the hell out of tiny minded individuals who worry about such things. I think blackened windows are a far worse crime against humanity, and driving round with your fog lights on all the time.

Id love a personalised number plate. But the ones I have looked at are soo expensive. And I like blackened windows lol

I have a black 4 x 4, with personalised plates, if I had the dark windows too It would look like a gangster or footbalers car. How disappointed people would be when a scruffy chap like me got out. My 8 year old played football at a posh school on saturday, which was like a stately home, mine was the only 4 x 4 with muck and without dark windows. I bet none of the others have ever had pigs in the back of theirs. But each to their own, I wish I had some of their refinement and money. ( only dad heckling the ref and bellowing encouragement to both sides just to avoid a match of throw ins, goal kicks and no goals)

I have owned VW camper vans for years now, the currently one used to look good but is in need of a paint job now, anyway, I took my partner and my daughter out for lunch to a near by posh pub, the car park was full of some very expensive cars and I parked the Barbie Pink 1971 scruffy VW in with them only to come out with our drinks and see a load of posh young lads coooing over it!!!!, that number plate included FLE at the end, my current one is FLU, funny, this is the first car that had doubled in value since buying it and I bet I could sell the number plate!!!

Ok, so I'm a tw*t and a w*****r am I!!! ;) ;)  My number plate that I bought with my new Volvo cost me £400 at the time the year my Mum died and left me the money with insructions to do just that - it was M50 ANY(Her and my names 'Annie')  However, when John died I sold the Volvo, left the plate, and kept his 4 x 4 as it was more useful in the Aberdeenshire weather (oh yes that's another reason I have one, isn't it - I'm an Aberdonian ;D)  The number plate on that just happened to match my surname so I transferred it across to my present car - so if you ever see K21 MAS behind you - watch out"!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's ME!!!!!!!!![

I have a lotus elise parked up in my garage - have not had it out for over two years as it just does not suit my lifestyle.  I also impulse bought a reg for it 'BAZ 73' a few years back.

Personally I do feel like a twat when I drive it - hence its been parked up for so long!! (must get round to MOTing it and flogging it at some point!!)

Alex would love a Lotus as well.

Its interesting reading people's thoughts on the subject. You always see some great personalised numberplates at the Royal Highland Show- someone has SHEEP (I can't remember how is actually typed now), another one is TUP, and I'm sure there's one that says T3XEL.

It maybe comes down to the type of person you are whether it comes over as you're being pretensious. I had an old boss who had one, and he only had his to show off.

Well, we have two personalised plates in our house.  But we only have one vehicle now, and the number plate is too new to put on it, so they are just on retention!!

I am not bothered about number plates, but for some reason my OH got them both with my intitials on.  We have LI MTM, which people always read as LIMIT and L9 MTM.  My personal choice would be the name of one of my horses, but as they are girls names, it would be expensive I suppose.  MOLL POLL OLI  etc.

Hmm let's see. If buying a personalised number plate made you a w***** (I wonder what that could be, I'm an innocent, honest), then so would choosing the make and model of car in the first place, the colour, the upholstery, the massive spoiler sitting high above the car and the clothing you wore to buy the car. Well, that second last one...

It's just one more choice of personal style, no different to any other item you choose to buy. After all, why should everything be the same? I've spotted an amusing private license plate and been cheered a little by it, not necessarily for the reason the owner would have hoped but that's their problem  ;D For those of you who claim you don't care as a car is an essential transport item ... that still has an influence on the type and style of car you choose to buy!

I wonder if T05 5ER is available.

In the past I had a personalised plate but it was bought as a present and to be honest I was never bothered about it.

I also inherited one owned by my father and was advised to sell it, no one wanted to buy it and as it was due for renewal we let it go. When we moved to Bulgaria I sold my dar with personalised plate as it wouldn't have been any use to us here and wasn't worth as much as it would have cost to put it on retention!

We have a jinxed car - it's a Focus Cmax and there is always something wrong with it - be it mechanical, electrical or jsut something annoying like some twat scratching the door, the typre pressure is a low just now - but i had a spell of getting a nail in the tyre every 2 weeks for about 3 months so had to get it repaired

thankfully nothing MAJOR - but it's always got some nuance that gets on my goat.

So, the future Mrs SB is getting a new car as a wedding present. Shhhhhhhhh! Now, I was unaware that i had to get the future Mrs SB a wedding present. I know people will want to get US something, but i thought the marriage itself would be enough - but NO, i've to get her a present too.

So, as we have a jinxed car and it irritates me so, and as we are planning for a houseful of sprogs once we are no longer living in sin I'm in the process of looking for a new car - it'll be a Toyota Verso.

I'm also going to get a personalised plate - CR55 KAS (Chris and Karen - kas is her nickname) is available for a couple of hundred. So if I can engineer getting the car delivered to nairn on the day of the wedding with the new plates on it, i think that'll tick the "wedding present" box.

thoughts?

Wouldn't you think a lifetime with you would be all a girl could want?  ;D

Yes it is traditional for the bride and groom to exchange gifts. I think the number plate is a lovely idea.

Can we watch you gift wrap the Verso?

if i can organise it, it'll all be streamers and tin cans with "JUST MARRIED" sprayed all over it!!

Though, if I do that - she can't get it until we are married - so she'll spend the day thinking i've got her nothing - and i'll be in the bad books.

i suppose I can just give her the keys nd she'll see it the next day.

But you are right Rosemary, she should be happy with what she is getting and not wanting any trinkets to go along with the eternity of blissful happiness I shall bestow upon her.

ungrateful sow that she is!

Chris, if she uses your computer she'll know! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  I think it's a lovely present, and anyway, quite often they are exchanged after the ceremony so she wouldn't necessarily think you hadn't got her anything. ;D

I have a personal plate & I drive a white van  :)  that's 2 things for people to judge me on ha ha ha   My plate's M11 KRR  I also have a couple more on retention which I picked up at auction for the right price. I bought them as an investment to be left to my kids as they will only go up in value.
It don't make me a t**t or a w*****r     I had money when I bought them but The ex wife has all the dosh now so I won't be buying any more  ;D

Lol @ Jakebob and Annie!

Have to say when we bought Alex's car, we initially walked straight past it at the dealer's because it didn't have a price on, and had a personalised numberplate, which meant we didn't know how old it was. It looked too new and shiny to be in our price range, and when we went home and looked at their website, we couldn't believe we hadn't seen it. So we went back down and bought it! We didn't get the personalised numberplate though- the previous owner wanted it.

Mrs Womble has a private plate on her car, that was given to her as an 18th birthday present. It was a while before she could afford a car to stick it on though!  ;D

One big advantage though - her car is 12 years old now, and being a VW, the design hasn't dated all that much (they've hardly changed Polos in the past 10 years, except perhaps the headlights!). An unexpected benefit, but having a private plate means that it doesn't feel like such old car for some reason!!

I agree with the initial sentiment that a personalised number plate, or tinted windows, or driving a humoungus 4x4 in the city are all synonymous with having a big neon sign that flashes 't*at alert'  ::). It's obviously a personal preference, but I think one has to be aware that to many people that's what it signifies  ;D ;D ;D

Other than my VW, the other cars I have owned are boring and like houses, I have individual taste and so to make my ordinary car different, and fun, I would have a personal number plate, to cheer people up ;D My VW is Yellow and on the fron wheel I have a smily face and how many people look, wave and smile is great, so to be stuck behind someone with an amusing number plate or an interesting one, is a great addition to the norm!!

Oh we do that - me and the OH try to make words out of number plates, but usually normal ones. The personalised ones are no fun because they are usually intended to mean something. We were behind this really erratic woman driver who was really starting to p*ss us off, and her number plate said PMS, so that may explain a lot!
