Has anyone tried growing ginger before, and what sort of conditions do I need for growing it successfully?
-
get a bit from the shop, chuck it in a pot,(lot of finesse with my gardening)give it a water in.
needs to be kept warm if you want it to grow. around about 20c is about right approx 2 and 1/2 feet. in a heated glasshouse border maybe 4 feet. hope this helps

that's where I went wrong, tried to grow some this winter but not kept it in a warm enough place!
Will have another try next month as the temps get higher :)
-
Brill! Chucking it in a pot is also my style of gardening, so don't worry ;D How do you know when it's ready to harvest?
-
To the best of my knowledge it dies back in the winter.... :)other half working botanic garden.. it grows there fine
and he says it easy but they have in a border
-
Ooh that's handy, having an OH who works at a botanic garden! I'll ask for more advice on exotic varieties, then ;D

I have ginger growing in my conservatory in a hydroponics unit. They need high moisture/sunshine and yes, they do die back in winter and I have reharvested the original bit of Sainsbury's ginger back and left new growth in there for this coming year. Good luck!
Oh and I forgot to say mine grew to about 6 feet so it needs height too! ;D

Wow! That's impressive :o I haven't got a hydroponics wotsit but I've got a greenhouse. I reckon if I can grow chillies in there, I can grow ginger as well. Oooo I'm looking forward to growing my own thai selection ;D

Don't forget lemongrass! Easy to grow - I did some in my greenhouse last year. All round yours to eat? OK? :yum:
-
And galangal, too! Right, that's it then - we're having trafalgar square feral pigeons in ginger, chilli and garlic stir fry and roadkill rabbit green curry - how's that sound? ;D
-
Never seen a rabbit in Trafalgar Square though! :D

i bought a bit from supermarket last month and suspended it over a glass of water till it sprouted. then placed it in a decent sized pot of compost and stuck it in the propagator. it's just started poking through - very exciting! planning to put it in greenhouse border when it warms up a bit
