Title: Smallholder's show/Spring festival Buillth Wells
Post by: Dogwalker on May 09, 2015, 10:44:39 pm
Anyone going to the show next week?

I was persuaded to enter the angora goat classes.  Been regretting it ever since I sent the forms in.
I've never even put a pet dog in a village show before.  I am so nervous.

Don't be nervous, you'll love it!! You'll be longing for the next show, I guarantee. Good luck and do't take it too seriously :fc:

Thank you 'devonlady' for the encouragement.
I will definitely not be repeating the experience.
If it was just doing the show it would be ok but I've still got to do all the animals here morning and evening so I'll be to-ing and fro-ing each day and be even more exhausted than usual.

Pop in and say hello anyone that comes, it'll be good to put some faces to names.

Mine are Cwmstwrdy angoras.

Well - I wasn't going to go but if you are going to be there Debs then that'll make it worth the entry fee!!

Can I give you a hand with the morning and evening tasks?…. or even do them while you are at the show?

Hi Suzanna
Problem with goats is they like their familiar routine and one of the jobs is hand milking.
Thanks for the offer, I'll have a think.

Hee, hee, hee ..... up early and ready to go this morning  :o ::) ;D.   Until I happened to flick onto TAS and spotted your post. Then a check and yes we had the wrong date.  Good job I turned on for my 'fix'.

We will be there next Sunday all being well.

Good luck Dogwalker. Will try to find you and thanks for your post!!!!!

Dogwalker - it will be exhausting but (hopefully) brilliant!

I have my first show in a couple of weeks... need to make a move and start putting all my gear together... (but I normally sleep in my van at the show and have my younger daughter with me to help, while OH looks after the stay-at-home bunch)

I've spoken to one of the established breeders this evening whose involved in organising it.   She said she's put me in the pen next to her and she's talked me through lots of little worrying things so I feel a little better about it all.
It's just one more thing to fit in when I'm already trying to do too much so I'm feeling a bit stressed out by it all at the moment.

Anyway off to bed now, one of the dairy goats looks like she might kid soon so I'll be up again to check her in a few hours.
Goodnight everyone.

Dogwalker, when we went last year we were very impressed with one of the goat judges. I know absolutely nothing about goats and was just interested but heard them take the time to go through the pros and cons of each animal with their owners and why she had placed them as she did.
I hope you get someone as good.

Linda, do you fancy meeting up for a coffee or something? Last time I went, Tizaala arranged for several of us to meet and it was great to put faces to names. Anyone else going to be there on the Saturday.

I'll be visiting the goats, of course.

Sunday for us - we will be the only ones there!

Well I'll be there both days obviously.  Busy on Saturday morning and probably need to be nearby most of the time but I intend to have a good look about the rest as well.
A meet up in the afternoon  would be good.
I think there's a grassy area between the angora building and the poultry and near all the other goats.  Not sure if it's being used for showing or if that's indoors again this year.
Mrs.'Uponeacre' is coming with me on Saturday and 'Uponeacre' on Sunday and I think Amanda from Montgomery smallholders group is coming on Sunday.

:excited:   Well much to my amazement I got a first and third for the two goats I'd entered and a first and fourth for the two fleeces.

I've never had rosettes for anything before.
I'm really chuffed with the first for the fleece as it's from a goat I've bred myself.

Problem now is I'd almost convinced myself to get rid of the angoras because they're too costly and too much hassle.  This has renewed my enthusiasm for them but doesn't give me any more hours in the day.

Glad you did well, Dogwalker. Your goats are lovely. I did see them. I saw you as well but you were talking to someone so I went to see the Boers until you were free but when I came back you had disappeared. I had a good look at all the fleeces and I am now determined to have a go at spinning some angora.

Sorry I missed you, I saw a few people I know but I think only Susanna from here.

Give me a shout when you'd like a mohair fleece and I can send you one.

Ooh yes please. Are you far from Wrexham? Have to take a couple of goats there in two weeks so could collect.

And are you now hooked on showing? ;) I love it. A day out with your dog/goat/poultry/canaries or whatever, meeting old friends, making new ones and maybe a bit of  :trophy: too!
Well done on your wins and remember, however well or not you do you always take the best one home!

MGofM-bit too far from Wrexham, I'm near Llanidloes, posting might be easier.

DL- I did enjoy it, just exhausting getting up at 4.30 to do the all the jobs first and get there for 8am each day.  I'm still feeling tired and have loads of things to catch up on that I would have done over the weekend.
Learned alot from the experienced breeders.
I'm not making any immediate decisions about the way to go until after this weekends visitors and kidding still to come.

I was disappointed, very little agriculture/lots of kitchenalia. I needed a new flexi drive for my Lister - nothing. Or a battery Horner set up - there was one but the special show price was 20% higher than the online one and actually I felt there was very little to see there in general for your entry fee. My son enjoyed the chicken shed though.  ???

Just looked at the map. I hadn't realised you were so far over. Post it is then. Let me know when they are ready and how much.  :D

I'll get it organised after the weekend, too much else to think about the next few days, I think my brain has seized up with overload.
