Title: I've just bought a pear tree!
Post by: sagehen on January 24, 2010, 03:05:17 pm
Wheeee! I'm so excited! I've just bought myself a comice pear tree  ;D Now I just need to buy another one so I can pollinate it (it's not self-fertile  :-\) I just can't believe how excited I am. Sorry just had to share!

Uhh I actually don't like eating pears, but that doesn't stop me from getting excited that we haven't got to buy fruit! Besides my husband and son both love pears so that's one good reason ;D  I'm eyeing a self-fertile cherry tree now - watch me get REALLY excited about that when I get it cos I love cherries!

Ooh, yummy, now you're talking!  Mind you pears fresh from the tree might be a whole lot different a ball game than the hard things you get in the shops  ;D

We;ve got two cherry trees and never had a cherry from them - we've never managed to beat the birds.

noooooooo you've just crushed my dreams *sob* What if I put a net over it, would that stop the birds from devouring the lot? We've got damsons and plums but the only bird that scoffs them is the woodpigeon!

What a good choice! We've only got one Comice tree but must have a pollinator in the neighbourhood. Ours is only 3 years old and last year I nurtured 4 pears on it until we had the loveliest chocolate pears EVER! Rosemary, we have now 3 cherry trees and I had 5 cherries from them so far, the birds are just too fast for me on them. I refuse to give up hope as I do have so many childhood memories with my gran's cherries in them  :)  :&>

Aw thanks! I didn't really know what choices I had, and I just went by the description of juicy pears. Good to know someone else has got it and rates it. But 3 cherry trees and five cherries altogether doesn't sound worth the money to pay out for cherry trees  :-\

no, I won't buy any more cherries ...I'll make a bigger effort netting them though this year. the only other fruit tree I would consider planting now is a Damson (and maybe a red devil apple). will see if all last year's new rees have survived - a vacant spot will be filled!  :&>

I've planted out my pear tree (err a fortnight ago?) and apparently temperatures are going to plummet again  :(  Will it affect my tree, do you think? Should I cover it in fleece or something?

I understand your excitment, we planted a number of cider apples, damsons, plums, gages and 2 comice trees last year. I've been smiling to myself at the blossom on each tree and wondered if the bees have done their job in pollonating them. If i get 1 pear on each tree i will be thrilled. Dobbies had a lucky dip end of season offer last week so we sent off for 3 trees. We got a sweet cherry, a fig and a damson. I am also a sucker for climbers so every tree i plant gets a clematis or a climbing rose planted next to it, some of the roses outgrow the trees for a while so i prune them back to keep them in check, i figure we might not get to see flowers yet but they're developing good roots. It's actually a joke in our house that each climber needs a companion climber. Hope you enjoy your pears, Helen

I almost caught myself counting the blossom on the  damson and the cherries! I'll be delighted if I have a handful of each  :&>

I have had my cherry tree for 6 years, each year I get so excited about the increasing number of cherries, then the birds get them :'(, once all the fruit trees start producing we are going to put a large net up like they do in the commercial orchards, hopefully that will fix them.

Just a comment upon my observations The Head Gardener has some poly-net its sort of 1/2" squares Which the gardeners drape over the cherry trees and the soft fruit bushes He also drapes it over the peach trees growing up the North Wall The Blackbirds get the odd ones but not many He claims there wouldn't be any if he didn't get it done I asked him how they did it in Victorian Times he said the boy would walk around and make a lot of noise with his clapper or what we now call a football rattle both were used.Unfortunately I never asked Tom what the variety is called but there is a dozen or more pear trees growing along the West Wall and I have never bought any as juicy or tasty as the pears that grow on those trees and absolutely laden with fruit.I will ask him if they are fed with anything next time I see him.He says they are dessert pears and will not keep long at all

how lovely! I'm not a big fan of the rock hard and tasteless conferrence which seems so popular. dessert pears are great for bottling in syrup or you can cook them and freeze for one of so many recipes (the ones with choc sauce...). Let's change the subject  ::) :&>
