Title: More crap news
Post by: jameslindsay on January 23, 2010, 01:37:46 pm
I received a phone call in the middle of the night lastnight from my sister to tell me that my 5 year old cocker spaniel was unwell (this is the pup of Gynty who has cancer, we found out on the 31st of last month). Anyway, she has just got out from the vets and has liver failure, and we are not home till Tuesday, what a dreadful start to our year!

The vet has said they could get things under control with drugs but at this early stage things do not look promising for her. I just wish we were at home, this has come so out of the blue. This distance is hell.

Sorry to hear about the dog, You need your holiday and the dog will be cared for until you get home although I am sure she will be on your mind till you return now. It's strange how these sort of things always seem to happen when people are on holiday....

James,
I'm so sorry to hear that  :(
You'll soon be home and at least she'll get some cuddles from her dad.
I've still got the photo's so consider reiki on it's way  ;)
Take care, Karen x

We got home this morning and boy is it cold???

Topsy is still a massive worry to us. My sister is sure the swelling has gone down a little but she is so swollen she is not steady on her feet and she is also off her food which is definitely not like her. I phoned the vet to see if the results were back from the fluid they removed but not yet.

We did get a terrific welcome from her and she is undoubtedly happy that we are home.

Thanks for everyone's kind words of encouragement. :)

Sorry to hear about Topsy.  Do hope things turn out ok for her.

Oh dear, thats the problem of returning from a nice holiday to this chilly island!  My neighbours spent Christmas in the Carribean on a cruise.  They said coming from 28 degrees to -18  and all the snow here, was rather a large shock!!  Hopefully you will adjust to our climate quickly!!

Thanks MM, we are having a roller coaster with her today. We spoke with the vet yesterday and none of the results are showing anything conclusive. However, the swelling has gone down a bit and although she has stopped eating dog food she will eat fish, chicken etc. However, this morning she was quiet, calm, lifeless and just not interested and we were distraught. At one point we said it "was time to let her go" and then all of a sudden she has rallied up again and is running about with one of her toys in her mouth. So, we don't know what will happen. She has to go back to the vet on Monday for more blood tests and they will compare the latest ones with last weeks and see if that tells them anything. I had an absolutely awful morning with worry about her but won't give up on her while she's fighting. If we can get rid of all this fluid we can keep her liver going with tablets the vet says. So, we live in hope.

James I dont know if you have been told but with liver damage it is better to restrict the amount of protein a dog eats.

I know dogs eat mainly meat(they are omnivours) but try a veg diet for a while to give the liver a rest. No dried food unless its soaked in warm warter either.

Hope this helps

Jackie

Jackie thanks I wasn't told that. I know I shouldn't build my hopes up, especially after seeing her yesterday morning, but today she seems to be so much better. For the last week she has basically went outside, done her business and straight back in but this morning we walked much, much further and she even ran up the stairs. She is not as greedy as she normally is but is still eating. Thanks for the advice.

You are very welcome to any help I can give James, no problem. :)

Do you mind my asking what tests she has had and what the vet is looking for?
He should perhaps be looking along the lines of liver flukes  fascola hepatica (fasciolosis)as you keep sheep and goats, or have you wormed/anti-fluked them recently?
Title: Re: More crap news
Post by: jameslindsay on January 30, 2010, 11:54:46 am
They took blood and sent it away to be analysed. They also sent away a sample of the fluid that is making her "bloated" but nothing comes back and points the finger at any specifics. He said on Thursday that he was still not hopeful that we would have a happy ending as the symptoms now could be the end product of her having had liver problems for some time and them going unnoticed (and now it's too late).

They have x rayed/scanned her but cannot get a clear view of the liver as there is so much fluid in her and because of this her organs are pushed all over the place. They have said they could perform a biopsy but he doubts that it would shed any further light on the problem and is also a bit intrusive for an already unwell dog.

I have to say that the swelling of the abdomen has really reduced in the last 24 hours and she is looking much more like her old self. We are too scared to build up our hopes yet but we are encouraged that things may just well be improving. As I said this time yesterday we were frantic but just now she is looking and behaving a bit like her old self.

Thanks for the interest. :)

Dont give up yet as the liver has a remarkable capacity to regenerate, even if it is scarred.

Hope things get better soon, I just was thinking about the dog we had to have put to sleep last year, I think he had cancer some time before he was  put sleep due to liver failure and other things but what used to make me smile he always seem to find a bottle of alcohol on our walks and actualy drank what was left so when he went to the vets for the last time, bless him, he smelt of beer!!! I even wondered about that causing him liver damage ;) ;)You sure she's not nipping into the bar for a tipple or someone passing her a night cap!! ;) ;)

Things are certainly looking a lot better for her. The swelling is almost completely gone and she is back to being her happy old self again, she still is not 100% but much improved. Took her to the vets on Monday morning for her blood tests and she was a shaking wreck when she knew where she was. These results should hopefully be back today.

She must be getting better, for the first time this morning she found one of her tablets that we had hidden in her food. Every other time she has ate the tablets without fuss but earlier she must have tasted it, spat it out and made a bloody mess. Who cares though as long as she is better?

Thats very good news - I have  found my dogs and cats are all cleverer than me when it comes to tablets. Although having watched the vet do it with ease, I bought a  tablet popper off him for my cat who had an abscess, and it was so much easier to get the tablets down her.

I'm sure I've posted this before - but it's a goodie, so here it is again  ;) ;D ;D ;D

HOW TO GIVE A CAT A PILL
1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right fore-finger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw Tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

13) Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

HOW TO GIVE A DOG A PILL:

1) Wrap it in bacon.

Just had to have the vet out as an emergency to one of my Pygmy goats. He didn't eat his tea tonight which is very unusual for a goat. So, I thought I would keep an eye on him. I went out and he was making a terrible noise, had been sick and it was smelling horrendous and was stressed.

The vet put a tube down his stomach and it went down easily,  there is no blockage but he does have sore guts. His temperature is normal, which is good. He suspects he will be fine but said he would make no prediction, he gave him an anti inflammatory injection.

I will be glad when this year is over, it has been hell so far!

Hello, she is doing much better. All swelling has gone and she's now enjoying going out for a walk etc. She was back at the vets on Monday where they took more blood tests. The results came back tonight and showed that everything was getting back to normal. They are still a bit concerned as they have no idea what caused  it in the first place. She will go back at the end of next week and they will probably take more blood tests to ensure that things are still improving. Her Protein level was almost back to normal and the liver is functioning well, so, fingers crossed she is back to normal. Thanks for asking. :)

Hahaha!  ;D ;D That's so true about giving a cat pills. And yes, you will inevitably get into a row with your OH. I don't bother with deworming pills for the cat now, I just use the drops. It's not worth the hassle!

James, don't wish the year away - it's only February!  :o ;D

No is the answer Annie. The dogs are never allowed out the back area for the simple reason is they would go after the animals and 2 of them would more than likely be straight in to the river!

Anything else she could have eaten?  The goats wouldn't have taken some leaves back inot the front yard would they?  I know you've probably gone over and over the possible causes, sorry if I'm just putting you throught it again, James, trying to help.

Not at all Annie but again the answer to that is No. She's still not back to how she used to be, still seems quiet at times. However, she is still on medication and perhaps that is making her tired. I did take the 3 of them along the beach the other day and she ran about like a mad man.

Thanks John. Gynty is doing well, with cancer it is just wait and see. However, she is showing no signs of being unwell so hopefully she will go on for a long time. Topsy is also doing well, just gone in to season which is the last thing she needed as this makes her quiet and miserable. Apart from that we are doing grand. Cheers. :) Our vet bill so far this year has been horrendous, but what else can we do?

Post by: jameslindsay on February 28, 2010, 02:32:59 pm
No mention of stroke but Liz did mention that too. I am taking her to the vets at 3.00pm as we are sure she is "swaying". The worry is that with her having liver failure it has effected her neurological system. This does seem to fit in with the lack of balance.

The vet took blood samples and they are showing an improvement on the last lot that she had 2 weeks ago. Tomorrow morning she has to go in for a few hours and they will do a Bile and acid stimulation test, again to check what the liver is up to. I have to say that after she has a period of swaying she quickly comes back to being her old self. Tonight all we were to give her for her dinner was Cottage Cheese and vegetables and let me tell you she was not impressed. She also got medicines today that would neutralise any toxins in her body.

Topsy's results came back earlier and basically show that she should not still be here. However, she seems to be doing great and fingers crossed that is how she continues. The next stage would be a liver biopsy but I hope it doesn't come to that. After a week of toothache and 2 visits to the dentist (at a 100 mile round trip each visit) I went to the Dr today to be told I don't have toothache I have mumps!!! I hate 2010 so far.

Hi James...sorry to hear about Topsy, I know how hard it is when a pet falls ill...its a year this month that we lost our own dog, Jack, after a three month fight and many, many visits to the vet..his death was a real shock and both my wife and I missed him terribly...vowing never to have another dog because we felt so miserable...a month later we brought a rescue dog and two months after that a second rescue dog...neither could replace the one's we lost, but like all animals they are their own characters and we love them just the same...and wouldn't want to be parted from either of them. I hope things work out better for you and my thoughts and best wishes are with you and Topsy...good luck my friend.

Regards
John

Good to hear Topsy is doing ok.  Whle she is not in bad pain, I would let her go on as long as she can, and enjoy your time together.

Sorry about the mumps.

I think, like me, you have had more than your share of bad luck, and its about time it changed for the better!!

Lastnight Topsy would not settle and this morning she was way back off colour again. So, we took her to the vet this morning and they kept her in to do a liver biopsy. They phoned us at 4.00pm and told us they were keeping her in overnight as she was very slow in coming round from the anesthetic.

Oh, James, I'm so sorry, looks like you are on that roller coaster.  It is awful, I know.  Hope she pulls through, but whatever happens we know you'll do your best for her.

Thanks Annie, you know she's been poorly since the end of January and she is still here so she must be a fighter. Fingers crossed that we can now get to the bottom of it and get her well again. Have a safe trip and enjoy. :)

James I'm not surprised she took ages to come round as the liver metabolises the anaesthetic to remove it from the body and Topsy's liver is compromised. Try to avoid any general anesthetic for her if you can, a local would be much better.

Just a passing thought James but have you had a second opinion from a different practise for Topsy?
Sometimes a different set of eyes and a different point of view helps, and if your vet is a farm vet and not a small animal vet he may not be up to date with things.

Hi Jackie. The vets we use are a small animal practice and have several practices in Fife. The problem before was  they did not know what had caused the liver failure so had to treat her "blind". The first time she took unwell the vet said she only had weeks to live but then was amazed at how well she responded. Again the first time she took ill she had so much fluid inside her that they could not get near the liver in any scan to see what was going on. The wee thing has had a rubbish time of it and a few weeks ago she was doing great we were all sure she was well on the mend. Hopefully now they will know what has caused this condition and will be able to treat it accordingly.

We had been told that due to the poor state of her liver that she would be slow in coming round but that it was vital she get the biopsy before her system shut down any more. Looking forward to hopefully getting her home later on this morning.

The results of Topsys liver biopsy have come back and showed that the vet did not get a piece of liver for them to analyse. We were warned that this could happen as she is so swollen and so her liver is not where it should be. So, we have to try again.

Found another lump on Gynty this morning so next Thursday she goes in for a mammary strip. It's never ending.

This is Topsy this afternoon, she goes on for surgery tomorrow as the biopsy they took did not work. So, this time they are having to knock her out and operate and as her liver is in a bad way she goes in to "high risk" category with the anesthetic but we have to do this, as much as I am worried sick for her.

When the vet opened herr up this morning they discovered that the liver was full of tumours. So, we made the decision that it was better to let the wee darling go.

oh guys, i am so sorry for you both, and the other dogs as well.  it's so hard to lose a young life.

When we came in for lunch last week, diane and i were talking to all 3 of them in the car park and she seemed so well - albeit a little quiet.  Poor wee lass but at least she is no longer in pain, not that that makes you miss her any less.

Hugs from us both xx

James, I am so sorry.  I have had two cockers with liver cancer and both had similar symptoms to Topsy.  I had hoped it wasn't the same with Topsy.  You've had a rotten year so far, hope it improves from now. xx

Thanks every one, I appreciate your thoughts and kind words. Yesterday was not an easy day for us and the house seems very empty with just 1 wee girl missing. Gynty is due to go in for her cancer op tomorrow which causes us fears as Ruby will be left with no other dog company. We rescued her over 2 years ago and she had always been 2 of many dogs so therefore never been without diggy company. We will just have to make a huge fuss of her and make sure 1 of us us with her most of the time.

The breeder we got both Topsy and Gynty from has offered us a beautiful 6 month old wee girl but it seems wrong to consider this so soon afterwards. I will want to get another one, time will tell.

She will keep her for you I'm sure, till you make up your mind, James.  Thinking of Gynty just now, though.

Gynty went in to the vets this morning and between the vet and us we decided not to go for the mamary strip. So, they sre going to remove the lump and x ray her lievr and lymph nodes and see how far, if any, the cancer has spread. We are all much happier and more comfortable with this and now we will take each stage as it comes and it helped that the vet agreed with our thoughts.

On a happier note I went to see this pup yesterday as I was down that way at the dentist yesterday and I brought her home with me. Her name is Floss and she is 6 months old. She has settled in really well and although will nevr replace Topsy she does help with the loss. I never expected to have another so soon but that's fate for you I guess.

Life has a funny way of never throwing us more than we can cope with at any one time - even though it tests us to the limit sometimes.  Your new girlie was meant to be I'm guessing otherwise, she would have been taken by someone before now.

Enjoy her.  Topsy's 'spirit' will always be around, even if she's not there in person.

Another great decision James...you're on a roll...we got two rescue dogs not long after losing our Jack last year and it was the best decision we made...wouldn't swap them for the world!

Hope things go well with Gynty...and give Floss and Ruby a big sloppy kiss each from me!

Yes, it was meant to be.  Liz held onto this pup hoping to be able to show her and the only thing wrong is that her head hasn't grown in proportion to her body - yet ;).  She has the most delightful nature.  I have watched her grow from when she was just hours old.  She is beautiful.  She is a lucky little girl to go to such a loving home.

Got Gynty home from the vets just after 6.00pm tonight and she is doing well. She is bright and lively and ate a little dinner. Her x rays show no sign of change since the last set that were taken in December so that has to be brilliant news. However, there is an expert at reading these x rays going to the practice next Wednesday and they are going to get him to offer his opinion. On the whole we are delighted with todays news.

James I am so sorry for your loss, I know it really does hurt. You did all you could for Topsy, you could not have done more and the decision you took was the right one for all of you.

Aha reading between the lines  (and reading Annies post) it sounds like you have a little showgirl there with your new pup. ;D

You will recognise if she needs to be in the ring if she shows off  (holds her head high amd struts) at every opportunity and waggles her rear end non stop at everyone. You are all going to have great fun if she is.  ;D :D

Gynty is not interested in Floss at all for the moment Annie. Ruby is a wee bit out of sorts at the moment but I think she is missing Topsy and yesterday she must have been anxious as Gynty was away at the vets all day and we have introduced this new wee live wire to her. Heyla seems to be a bit more settled now Liz says which is good news.

By lastnight all bar 3 of them were being sick and 2 of the Pygmy's I was very worried about. This morning all but 3 of them ate breakfast and I am now only still worried with Harry, 1 of the Pygmy's. I am hoping that after a further 24 hours they will all be well again, we have secured the fence to stop them escaping but you know what goats can be like.

Just had a thought about these damned escaping goats of yours - have you tried an electric fence?  I know they might try to jump it but if they were enticed near it so they tried it out and got a shock they might stay away from it.

Just catching up with posts.  Love your new dog - gorgeous!!

Sorry about your goats - but good to know they are getting better.  Its a worry when they get out and you do not know what they have eaten.  I was beside myself when 7 of mine got in a neighbours garden the other week.  As far as we know, just a few pansy heads were eaten, which was a relief to me!!

I am finding that all my animals are really hungry just now.  There is still no grass through, well, not here at least.  Although its been a better day today.  I think your goats are just going AWOL to find something tasty to eat.  Just an idea, but could you leave them some extra hay or something,  maybe fill them up and take their mind off escaping?  I have been managing to collect a few willow branches at lunchtime, which the goats are devouring, and hopefully keeping their mind off getting out again.

I know its easier said than done, to keep goats in once they find a way out of where they should be.  But it does sound as if yours are finding something that is not good for them to eat.  If they do it again, they may not be so lucky next time, and we don't want that!!!

Thanks Roxy. You know it is very strange, and may be down to such severe weather, but we have been here 3 years and they have never eaten any of the bad stuff before. You may also be right that they finish the hay and so therefore take off hunting for more food. I thought they had access to as much hay as they wanted but you have got me thinking now.
Title: Re: More crap news
Post by: jameslindsay on April 11, 2010, 07:38:21 am
All goats are now back to how they should be. I have ensured that they have more than enough hay than they need and they have actually stopped straying as far on the land and are quite content to stay put. Thanks for the invaluable advice Roxy. :)

Pleased to hear the goats are all in good health again, James!!  If they have full bellies, they tend to chew the cud and keep out of mischief.  We have no grass through yet, so I too am feeding extra hay to keep my herd happy.
