Title: Gerald the destroyer
Post by: mattjen on October 12, 2014, 02:40:12 pm
Hi all I'm looking after some advice please?
My boar seems to
Have to destroy every ark he comes in contact with,
My four sows manage to live in them quite comfortably without any problems
But as soon as I let Gerald near them
He has to completely destroy them
So just wondering what everyone else uses for their boars?
Many thanks

Never had any probs with deliberate destruction of property. Obviously theres something he associates them with or can smell other males on them possibly?
Our boar lives in his own ark spring & summer and we take the girls to him so he always has his own smells around him, in winter he has his own stable and yard and again the girls go to him as necessary.
The only real solution is a breeze block pemanent ark that he can't push over!

Are the arks new or secondhand?  If it might be smell you could try misting the inside with diluted Jeyes fluid, which will mask most things.

Give him a round bale of hay to build a nest with and just leave him be. He will be fine. If its due heavy rain pop him in another or even a few to create a right angle wall.

build him a house out of breeze-blocks ...
We've learnt that goats can't eat it!  Pig house is next big job on the list

Is he destroying it deliberately or is he just having a good scratch and leaning against it?

Our Kune Kune boar has moved the house we built just by scratching against it regularly and it was solidly built with 6x2 battens and 5 inch nails!
