Sure someone must've put this on somewhere else, but it's the Rare Breeds Sale tomorrow.

I came
I saw
I left.
This used to be a really good sale where people brought their best animals for the show on Friday and sold them on the Saturday. I used to take the day of work on Friday so I could get them in the show, and I have in the past won best of breed for poultry and sheep.
Now however, with some notable exceptions, it seems to be a place where people get rid of their rubbish.
Today there were 3 pedigree white heifers, 18 months old, and they looked like they'd been wading waist deep in mud. They were also a lot thinner than you would expect from a grazing season where the grass has never stopped growing. I cannot understand why people bother to breed and register pedigree stock and then cannot be bothered to even wash them or present them in some sort of way that shows the breed off to its best.
There were highland cattle, again pedigree registered, but very mediocre for their age which fetched about 2 thirds of what I get for my unregistered but well grown and shaped ones of the same age.
The trouble is that the prices that the poor quality stock fetch are then publicised. And people then think that as this is a specialist sale, then that is all that these minority breeds are worth.
(That is not to say that everything was poor quality. There were still some very nice animals and birds, but these are becoming more and more in the minority.)

We took pigs. Got 250 for our Hampshire boar and Tamworth weaners got to 30. Bit disappointed with weaner price but it's a bad time of year for selling weaners.
Not many buyers around the pigs really

What a shame that it isn't as good as it used to be! I used to go eagerly, twice a year, but due to working Saturdays, haven't had the chance for about 5 years. I'd hoped to get there this year, but things conspired against me. I seem to remember one was much better than the other, but can't now remember if the Spring sale was better than the Autum Sale or vice versa.
I was always divided at the spring do, though, as they also held the King George V tophy event for Cleveland Bay Stallions out the back, so had to keep dashing backwards ad forwards to see everything. ;D

I was there first for a couple of years, can't comment on the cattle as didn't see them. Had a quick look at the pigs and they looked ok to me. Watched a few sheep going through and I must say the show of hebridean sheep was most impressive, the champion went for over a thousand guineas. The more I see of these sheep The more I like them and there owners. The poultry were the usual mixed bunch with some descent stock to be found. I went with the idea of buying some bantams cuckoo Scots Dumpy if I liked the look of them I did,so they came home with me. The place was buzzing with a lot of friendly folks met a couple of known faces namely Ruth Dalton RBST and John Stevens Shetlands. The roast beef dinner was lovely and not expensive. I agree that if possible animals for sale should be presented at there best to get the best return obviously but I don't know the circumstances of the sellers and there reasons. A long and tiring day not helped by five different sets of road works on the A1 madness in my opinion. Will I be back only if there is something that takes my interest as its a long way.

Thank you bigchicken - that will have put a few noses out of joint :innocent: Good to see it's not the usual suspects.
I don't do facebook - was it a tup?
A price like that is really good for the breed. The previous record was still I think a tup around that price from the Highlands and Islands Heb show and sale when it used to be at Oban.
We had a lovely long-lived ewe from the Healeys - great sheep.
Yes, Hebbies are wonderful all round ( unless you want to knit vests for your baby from the wool :spin: :knit: )
-
Yes it was a tup picture on Facebook.

I would love to see Dumpy bantams!

I have a few dumpy Bantams mainly black and one cuckoo hen left from a trio I got up from southern England so the addition of this new trio will bolster my hopes of breeding a few cuckoo youngsters next year. There will be a few dumpy Bantams on show at the scottish national poultry show in January at Lanark Mart.
