Title: Finally finished OH's pressie
Post by: clydesdaleclopper on September 26, 2014, 03:33:52 pm
As OH is impossible to buy for I decided to make his birthday present this year - a bread board. It took a long time to make as I only used hand tools so he'd better like it or it may be converted into a weapon  ;D

That is simply lovely!  Do you take commissions?

CC,

Its wonderful!  I love it.

What wood is it that you've used?
And how long did you season it for?

It's ash - I don't know how long it was seasoned as I bought the chunk from someone who did all that part. Felling trees myself is a bit tricky with a bad back  :)

It is beautiful.
Our very old oak tree had a 'hair cut' last year and most of it has been chopped into log size pieces but there are some larger pieces that I could do something with.
You've got my mind going now with possibilities.

I'm afraid not - it takes me too long to make stuff with not using any power tools so it wouldn't be economically viable.

These took me a couple of years to do as I can only work on anything for a few hours a week at evening class as I don't have any facilities at home.

Gosh they are beautiful too!

Wish I had the patience to have a go at woodwork.

Thanks for all the nice comments - I'm a terrible perfectionist and I just see all the flaws  ::)

You must have better sight than me, CC. I couldn't see any flaws at all. I've never been able to work with wood. I cannot saw to save my life, nails never go in straight for me and drill bits snap. I'll stick to spinning, etc.

I discovered woodworking this year tho I need some power tools as my hands are arthritic and lack grip for hand tools. I do all the sanding and finishing by hand tho and like yourself only see the flaws!

I'd be interested in more pics of the board to see how you made it ie other angles.  Looks lovely to me and I am looking for seasoned wood for my first cabinet but costs are beyond me yet so am wondering about some smaller projects meantime as I miss it!  Assuming you are OK with imitation as the sincere form of flattery it is intended to be!
