Title: Little spaniel in need of a very loving home- UPDATE
Post by: Jukes Mum on September 19, 2014, 03:06:03 pm
I recently rescued a little spaniel.
She was advertised on Facebook as "Springer spaniel bitch 18 months. £200. Want rid of it as soon as possible".
Obviously everyone jumped on the post on FB saying "is she stolen?" etc. and the lad selling her removed the post within a couple of minutes of placing it.
I also thought that she could be stolen but managed to get in touch with the young lad selling her "for his uncle". Whether I did the right thing or not, I do not know but my theory was to just go and get her out of there and then try to find out if she was stolen etc.
Anyway I went and got her and speaking to the young lad and his uncle, it was quite apparent that they had indeed had her from a puppy. They use terriers and lurchers for rabbiting and thought a spaniel would be handy to flush the rabbits for the lurchers. Anyway they realised that this wasn't going to work and decided to sell her.
The little girl (we have named Daisy) was covered in fleas, stank to high heaven and her tail was really badly damaged. She had been tied up by her back leg with a piece of wire which her leg had grown around.
I have had her for about 6 weeks now. The vets have removed the wire from her leg and were amazed by the lack of damage it has caused. She has had to have her tail amutated due to the damage and that has now healed beautifully. Despited everything she has been through she is amazingly friendly. She loves everyone and just wants to be touched. She is a real live-wire and does not stop for a second, but she is ever so good. She picks things up really quickly and is very trustworthy. She has had a couple of 'accidents' involving the chickens. On two occations the chicken have flown out of their pen and she has duely brought me the rather unimpressed looking hen (completely undamaged!). She is fine in the field with the sheep, fine with the cat, fine with other dogs, fine in the car etc etc.
So now that I know that she is happy and healthy it is time to find her her forever home. I am in no hurry; my priority is finding exactly the right home for her.
While they said she was a Springer, she is small and has very cocker-ish mannerisms and I suspect that she is more likely to be a sproker. Obviously she has no papers.
With some training she could make a nice beating dog. Her recall is fantastic and we have just started on the stop whistle.
She could also be a fab little agility dog, but I think that she would excel at some sort of detection work. She has a fab nose and loves sniffing things out. If anyone knows of anyone who could give this little girl the love she deserves, please could you messgae me?
She is such a love bug that it is difficult to get a picture of her as she's always stuck to my legs. I have put a couple belwo, but will try to get a better pic soon!

Whereabouts are you? We have a homing/rescue network here in Devon. A group of like-minded folk who will do their best to re-home homeless/ unwanted dogs. We make no charge for this but 'nor do we sell people's pets for them. Some of us will foster in an emergency( I have two fosters who have come back twice and I don't wonder why ::) ::) and they are here now for life) but in the main we aim to find homes for dogs/ dogs for homes.  Will give you my 'phone number if you pm me.
Sylvia.

I got my rehome through Facebook, have a look at your local animal page I am sure there will be somebody and they will be close enough to weed out the unsuitable. What a nice thing to do and good luck.

I'm sure I have had better ideas in my time  ;) but when my OH said "you can't help them all" I did think "no, but I can help this one"  :) I'm in no hurry for her to go anywhere but if anyone does hear of the right person, please drop me a line.  :)

JM My neighbour has just taken on a retired sniffer spaniel that she got via her sisters contacts in the dog rescue world. Would you like me to ask if the process could work in reverse with a dog looking for a career as a sniffer dog? We are in near York (ish)

Buffy- that would be fantastic - thank you!
She'd make a fab sniffer dog and I'd really like her to have a job  :)

Good on you, she looks lovely and is safe. I hope she finds a forever home soon  :fc:

I wish I had the guts and money to get the pups out of my neighbours house. Complained at their abuse to pups,3 days later all pups gone.  :'(  Don't know where and the neighbours avoid me like the plague even using the front door when we all use the back.

Hi Sorry a torn knee ligament is slowing me up on all fronts. My neighbour tells me that they do take dogs that are gifted to them. Do you want me to get you a number or have you found her a loving home?

Hi Buffy- I will not be gifting her- she has cost me £500 so far ;-) I want to make sure she gets the perfect home, rather than just passing her on. Thank you anyway.

Fab news. Little Daisy went to her new home on Friday. She is going to be doted on, living in the house with another spaniel. They will carry on with the gundog training I started and hope to have her working by the end of this season. Her new mummy is already dotty about her  :excited:
A happy ending to my part of her story, but I do miss her  ;)

No so great news. Daisy is coming back on Thursday. Apparently she has pee'd on the carpet 7 times. She lived outdoors previously so was probably never housetrained so I'm not too surprised, but this is obviously something they are not prepared to deal with.  We had her in the house at night but she was crated and she never had an accident.
He even asked if he could pay less for her. Apart from the fact that I haven't settled the last vets bill yet, even if she was free she would still pee on the carpet!
So the search is on again for a home for her. I'm really upset as I just want the best for her >:(

 :(

I cannot understand some people! If she's peeing on the carpet, train her not to. You don't send her back like she's defective!

I got my Lola dog because the home she was going to sent her back when she barked and it scared the blokes girlfriend!
That said I'm glad they did send her back because now she's with us.

:fc: you can find an even better home for her that cares more about the dog than the carpet!

What a lame excuse - I still have problems with Belle aged 10 who I took when she was 2!  If I have a rug in the kitchen over winter she'll occasionally have pee-ed on it by the time I get up - but not in summer when it's not in the kitchen, or if I get up at a reasonable time instead of being b--y lazy!  It's MY fault, NOT hers!  :innocent:

My goodness, one minute they are going to carry on her gun dog training but they can not train her not to pee on the carpet. I ask you!
Many years ago I got a very hyper collie from the RSPCA she was about 10 months old, she had been kept in a flat and had never be toilet trained. It took about a week to train her if that, she once got caught short and pooed in the bath, which I thought was quick thinking for a dog since she had never been in the bath.
She also had separation anxiety which was really bad when we first got her. She was only left alone for half an hour, which was the time between my husband going to work and I got back from work on nights. In that half an hour she would chew always one shoe from  a pair, never both and once dug a neat hole through the spare bed mattress. We never thought once of sending her back.

My word!! If you have dogs you have piddle-proof floors surely! We have always had Rhino-floor or similar and washable rugs (one is in the washing machine as I type) Would you re- home a toddler because it had pee-d on the floor? Some people are so precious >:( >:(

What a shame, poor daisy. I hope someone else is willing to take her on and show a bit more commitment.

Out of coincidence from the last few posts, I have a dog called Lola and one called belle  :dog: :dog:

People like that are  not true dog lovers. My Jack Russell is prone to the odd pee in the house if we do not watch him. Also had the dogs throw up now and again. that's what happens when you have pets !

would you consider keeping her? She has been through so much already and seems to have found a patient, knowledgeable and caring owner in you. The vets bill wont seem so bad if you see it as investing in your own dog and the cost will soon be forgotten. This story is heart breaking but finding a the right home for an abused rescue dog and finding someone prepared to pay for a working dog may turn out to be two different things.

I took on two stray cats who arrived here 3 years ago and this year one of them cost £500 in vets fees. I dont begrudge it and they have a wonderful contented life here wanting for nothing and yet I would not have paid a rescue centre £100 each to adopt them in the first place. Equally if I had to call out the vet to treat a sick lamb I know that I wouldnt be able to pass that cost on to a future buyer. The lamb is worth the market price regardless of the investment in raising it.

I have had rescue animals for many years and they come with baggage. They need work to get them back on track. Like you I'm the kind of person who is prepared to put that time in but I wouldn't want to pay for the privilege. Any one who takes her on clearly has to do some work with her to overcome her terrible start in life so it's a special person who will take her to their hearts and refund all your costs. It may take you some time to find that person but I read an article about a young girl who raised £1000 to rescue a st Bernard from a life in a tiny cage in Eastern Europe and ship him over here. So special people do exist.

What you have done for this dog is truly wonderful and far more than many others would have done but Keeping her seems to be the best way to ensure her safety and get a return on your investment.  I wish you both good luck in what ever you do.

She sounds and looks an absolute sweetheart and what you have done is wonderful. cant help thinking like previous post that she's found her home !! We paid £400 for our black and white springer puppy Bear ( 13 years ago) and he has been worth every penny a hundred times over-baggage free, uncomplicated and simply perfect boy that he still is. our rescue terrier Barney was considerably cheaper (thank god) would try the patience of a saint and like many rescue dogs often needs a bit more understanding and tolerance. You didn't say that you wanted to recoup your Total expenditure but as much as I love the breed I wouldn't expect a Barney if i'd paid for a  Bear

UPDATE!
When it came to the crunch, they couldn't bear to part with her, so they have decided to get new flooring and keep her! While I was really annoyed with them and was tempted to say no, she really does have a great home there. The wife is dotty about her. The husband has been taking her out training and can see her potential. Apparently she is glued to him in the house and despite the piddling on the carpet, he has completely fallen for her.
I would love to have kept her, but it would not have been the best for her. Each of our dogs has it's own job and generally we only work one each at once. Daisy would have been a nice little beating dog, but we have others to do that job already. My fear was that she would end up at home while we're working the others and we don't currently have the time to put into her training to get her ready for the field.
Going to visit her sometime this week for a cuddle though :-)
